Spotting hidden defects on a car — what you can see yourself and what you can't

Rust behind trim strips, resprayed accident damage, manipulated odometer readings, engine noises shortly after a cold start: many defects can be uncovered during a viewing — if you know where to look. Here our inspectors show what you can see with the naked eye and when an appraiser is decisive.

Which defects can I spot as a layperson, and which not?

As a layperson, a careful viewing lets you spot many surface defects: uneven panel gaps at the doors and wings point to repairs after an accident, rusty sills or wheel arches are visible to the naked eye, and oil stains under the engine or on hoses give away leaks. What you can hardly assess yourself, on the other hand, are paint thicknesses on individual body parts, the exact extent of structural damage after an accident, the actual mileage on a tampered odometer, or hidden engine damage that shows up in the OBD fault memory. This is exactly where the on-site inspection by a qualified vehicle appraiser comes in: with a paint-thickness gauge, OBD diagnostics, an underbody mirror and the experience from a large number of inspected vehicles, defects become visible that stay hidden during a layperson's viewing. checkdenwagen offers this inspection from €289 incl. VAT and travel — directly at the seller's, with no detour.

The five most common hidden defects when buying a used car

Rust — visible and concealed

Visible rust on the sills, wheel arches or underbody is an obvious warning sign. More dangerous is rust under sealant, behind plastic trim, or on members and longitudinal beams. You should never go without a lift or a pit if you want to inspect a vehicle seriously.

Accident damage and bodywork repairs

Uneven panel gaps between the doors, wings and bonnet are the clearest sign for a layperson. Resprays can be recognised by matte surfaces, a slightly differing colour shade, or paint seams along edges. A paint-thickness measurement gives certainty: the factory finish has consistent values around 80 to 120 micrometres; readings that deviate massively indicate filler or multiple coats of paint.

Odometer fraud

The displayed mileage doesn't always tell the truth. Warning signs include a worn steering wheel and gear knob on a car with supposedly low mileage, heavily worn pedal pads, or a service booklet with widely spaced entries. The OBD fault memory occasionally contains stored measurement points that document the actual mileage.

Engine damage and technical defects

Blue smoke at cold start points to oil burning, white smoke when warm to coolant loss. An oil level that drops too quickly, a pressureless coolant expansion tank, or mayonnaise residue on the oil cap are further warning signs. Without reading out the OBD system, however, many fault codes remain invisible.

Moisture damage and water ingress

Particularly relevant on older vehicles and estate cars: damp boot trim, a musty smell in the interior, headlights fogged up from the inside, or wet floor mats are signs of leaking seals, blocked drainage channels, or even flood damage.

What a professional sees on top

A qualified vehicle appraiser from checkdenwagen supplements the visual inspection with a paint-thickness measurement, full OBD diagnostics, a test drive with a systems test, and a targeted check of the suspension, brakes and drivetrain. The written photo report documents every finding — and gives you a factual basis for the price negotiation or the decision to walk away from the vehicle.

Common questions: spotting defects on a used car

The most reliable signs for a layperson are uneven panel gaps at the doors, bonnet and wings, visible paint seams along edges, and a differing surface texture or colour shade on individual body parts. A paint-thickness measurement, which is only possible with a measuring device, gives certainty: readings far above the factory paint range point to filler or a respray.
