Why the dipstick reveals so much when buying a used car

The dipstick is the only diagnostic window into the engine that's open to you without tools. You need no device, no lift and no permission to take the engine apart — a reach under the bonnet is enough. And because many sellers spruce the car up cosmetically but don't touch the oil condition, you often find the unvarnished technical state here.

Two things you read off the dipstick, and they aren't connected. The quantity tells you whether the engine is losing or burning oil and whether the seller takes maintenance seriously. The condition — colour, consistency, foreign matter — tells you something about the internal processes in the engine: mixing with coolant, overdue maintenance or wear debris from bearings. The first half of this article walks you through measuring cleanly, the second half through interpreting what you see on the stick.

Important upfront: the oil level does not replace a full inspection. It's a strong single signal that tells you whether to look more closely or avoid a vehicle altogether. Always combine it with a look at leaks, cold-start behaviour and service records.

Chapter 2

Preparation: vehicle level, engine at the right temperature

Before you even touch the dipstick, two conditions must be right, otherwise you're measuring nonsense. First: the vehicle is standing on a horizontal surface. If the car stands even slightly at an angle — on a sloping driveway or with one wheel on the kerb — the oil pools to one side in the sump and the stick reads too much or too little. When in doubt, sight across the bonnet to check whether the car really is level.

Second, the engine temperature. Oil expands with heat, which is why the state you measure in matters. Most manufacturers give the engine at operating temperature as the reference: warm the vehicle up or let it run for a few minutes, then switch it off and wait one to two minutes so the oil drains from the engine back into the sump. If you measure straight after switching off, there's still too much oil in the upper engine areas and the stick reads too low.

When buying a used car you often face a dilemma: for the engine inspection you want to find the vehicle cold and unstarted, because the cold start reveals the most. For the exact oil-level measurement, operating temperature would be ideal. The practical route: measure cold first, before the seller starts up — that gives you a rough but usable level and, above all, an undisturbed view of colour and consistency. After the test drive you can measure again with the engine warm if the amount seemed borderline. Some newer vehicles no longer have a dipstick at all, only an electronic oil-level display in the on-board menu — then you read the value there, but you need a defined measuring state according to the manual.

Chapter 3

Checking the oil level: measuring step by step

The measurement itself is simple, but the sequence determines the accuracy. Keep a lint-free cloth or kitchen roll to hand — a rag that leaves fibres behind falsifies the reading.

Pull the dipstick (usually a clearly visible ring or bow handle, often yellow) all the way out. This first pull shows nothing reliable yet, because oil sloshed up the tube when you switched off. So wipe the stick completely clean and note exactly where the min and max marks sit — they can be two notches, a cross-hatched field, two dots or a zone with a wavy line.

Now push the clean stick all the way back into the tube up to the stop and pull it out again calmly after two or three seconds. Only this second pull shows the real oil level. Hold the stick horizontal or with the tip pointing slightly down as you do so, so the oil doesn't run along the stick and smear the edge. Read off where the oil film ends — that's your oil level. With very light, fresh oil the edge is hard to see; tilt the stick slightly into the light, then the rim stands out more clearly.

  • Park the vehicle level and clarify the engine temperature (operating temperature as the reference, measure one to two minutes after switching off).
  • Pull the dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth — the first pull doesn't count.
  • Push the stick all the way in up to the stop, wait briefly, pull it out again and hold it horizontal.
  • Read the oil-film edge between the min and max marks and assess the condition of the oil at the same time.

After reading, wipe the stick again and push it fully back in so the tube stays sealed. If the stick doesn't sit cleanly in its guide, or the handle is brittle and broken, that's a small but honest hint at careless maintenance.

Chapter 4

Reading the min and max marks correctly — and the right amount of oil

The oil film must sit between the two marks — and with a margin to both ends. The ideal level lies in the upper third of the range, but below the max mark. Anything within the marks is basically fine; what's interesting are the edges and whatever goes beyond them.

If the oil sits below the min mark or the stick is only just wetted at the bottom end, oil is missing. The gap between min and max corresponds to roughly 0.5 to 1.0 litres on most passenger-car engines — that's not a tiny buffer but a relevant amount. So if the car sits at the min mark, about a litre has disappeared along the way. Driving below the min limit means inadequate lubrication and, in the worst case, bearing damage, which is why an empty stick on a purchase candidate is always a warning sign you have to follow up: is the engine losing oil via a leak, or burning it?

Just as bad is overfilling beyond the max mark. Too much oil lets the crankshaft dip into the oil level, the oil foams up, loses its lubricating effect and can be forced into the intake tract via the crankcase ventilation. A level well above max is therefore not a sign of care but of sloppy topping up — and sometimes an attempt to disguise high consumption.

When topping up, the rule is: in small steps. There's often only about a litre between min and max, so top up about 0.2 to 0.3 litres, let the oil drain down and measure again, rather than pouring it all in one go. That way you hit the upper range without overfilling.

Chapter 5

Checking the engine oil: which oil you top up with

Just as important as the quantity is the right type of oil — and this is where laypeople and some sellers make the most consequential mistakes. You top up exclusively with oil that meets the approval and the viscosity from the owner's manual of the vehicle in question. Both are in the manual and often additionally in the service booklet or on a sticker in the engine bay.

You recognise the viscosity from the SAE classification like 5W-30 or 0W-40. The number before the W describes the flow behaviour in the cold, the number after it the thickness at operating temperature. An engine designed for 5W-30 doesn't tolerate just any 10W-60 — modern engines with narrow oil channels, turbochargers and variable valve timing react sensitively to the wrong viscosity.

Even more decisive than the viscosity on many modern vehicles is the manufacturer approval. These are standards like VW 504.00/507.00, MB approval 229.x, BMW Longlife-04 or the ACEA classes (such as C3). They set the chemical composition — especially important on engines with a diesel particulate filter or petrol particulate filter, which need a low-ash Low-SAPS oil. The wrong oil can clog the particulate filter here. A canister from the DIY store with the right viscosity but without the required approval is therefore not a safe choice.

For a quick check on the road, when something is urgently missing, an approval-compliant oil of the same viscosity is the right stopgap. As a rule you don't cheerfully mix different oils, and you never pour an oil without the matching approval into a sensitive modern engine. If you have to top up on a purchase candidate, make a note of it — a car that already needs oil at the viewing raises the question of consumption.

Chapter 6

What the oil colour and consistency reveal about the engine

Now comes the part that goes beyond the plain level check: interpreting. Wipe the dipstick onto a white sheet of kitchen roll and assess colour, consistency and foreign matter in grazing light. Fresh engine oil is honey to amber coloured and thin. It gets darker with the miles — that alone is normal, because oil binds combustion residues; that's its job. What's telling are the deviations.

Milky, light, mayonnaise-like: this is the most serious finding. A light, creamy foam on the dipstick or on the inside of the oil filler cap means coolant has mixed with the oil — typically via a defective cylinder-head gasket, more rarely a crack in the engine block or cylinder head. That's potentially expensive engine damage. Careful when distinguishing it: a wafer-thin light film on the cap alone can arise from condensation in pure short-trip use in winter and be harmless. But if the mayonnaise-like emulsion extends onto the dipstick and into the oil itself, it's no longer condensation but genuine damage. A further counter-check is white, sweet-smelling, persistent exhaust smoke and a dropping coolant level.

Jet-black and gritty: very dark oil that feels gritty or sooty when rubbed between your fingers and leaves particles behind points to a long-overdue oil change. The oil has used up its additives and no longer lubricates reliably. That's rarely instant damage, but a clear sign of neglected maintenance — and a car on which oil was skimped usually wasn't looked after elsewhere either. Cross-check the finding with the service booklet straight away: if the last documented oil change doesn't match the condition of the oil in terms of time and mileage, something is off.

Metallic sheen: tilt the stick into the light so the surface glints. Fine silvery or golden glitter particles in the oil are metal wear debris from inside the engine — from bearings, camshaft or piston rings. That's an alarm signal for advanced wear and the strongest reason to keep your hands off a purchase without a workshop finding. Don't confuse the sheen with the normal shine of fresh oil; what's meant are visibly suspended, glittering solids.

Chapter 7

Oil consumption as a warning sign and its meaning for the sales negotiation

Oil disappears in two ways: it drips out (a leak) or it burns (internal wear). Both show up as a falling oil level, but the cause costs differently. You find leaks as fresh oil traces on the engine block, on the oil sump, on the valve cover or as a puddle on the parking spot — a light oil film is common on older engines, a dripping-wet area or a fresh puddle is not. If the engine burns oil, you see bluish smoke from the exhaust, especially on load change or after over-run.

A certain amount of oil consumption is still tolerable depending on the manufacturer, especially on high-mileage engines. It becomes critical when the seller admits, or you find out, that large amounts have to be topped up regularly, or when the oil level is already low again despite a recently documented oil change. High oil consumption points to worn piston rings, defective valve stem seals or a worn turbocharger — repairs that, depending on the engine, reach deep into the drivetrain. An overfilled oil level can, incidentally, be an indication that someone generously topped up high consumption before the viewing.

For the sales negotiation this means: ask specifically when oil was last topped up and how much, and have the oil change shown to you in the service booklet and with an invoice. A well-cared-for car has a clean, amber to dark but not sooty oil level in the upper range, a dry oil sump and a seamless maintenance record. If you find milky oil, a metallic sheen or fresh leaks, that's not a point to haggle over for a few hundred euros, but a reason to reconsider the purchase entirely or have a specialist take a look before you decide. Conversely, don't use a clean oil finding as a free pass — it says nothing about rust, accident damage or electronics.

Chapter 8

Where checking the oil reaches its limit

The dipstick shows you quantity and condition, but it neither proves engine damage nor rules it out. Clean oil can sit in an engine with a cleared fault memory, sporadic misfires or incipient bearing damage without you seeing anything on the stick. And the exact cause — cylinder-head gasket, turbocharger, piston rings — can be suspected from the oil but not determined. Some modern engines make it even harder, hiding oil access under covers or dispensing with the dipstick entirely.
