Why the transmission deserves an inspection of its own

Engine and transmission are often lumped together, but they are two different assemblies with completely different damage patterns. This article deals exclusively with the drivetrain of transmission and clutch — not the engine, oil or combustion, which are topics of their own. The reason for the special treatment is simple: transmission damage is among the most expensive repairs on a car, and its symptoms almost never show up while stationary, but only under load and often only after a while of driving.

What makes it harder is that the designs behave in fundamentally different ways. A manual gearbox gives itself away through what you feel in your hand and your foot — resistance at the shift lever, a grinding as a gear engages, a dragging clutch pedal. A torque-converter automatic, a dual-clutch transmission (DSG) or a continuously variable CVT, by contrast, communicate through jerking, shocks, delay and, in the worst case, a limp-home mode. Anyone looking only for one symptom pattern will miss the decisive signs on the other design.

Chapter 2

Manual gearbox: grinding, notchy shifting and jumping gears

On a manual gearbox the symptoms are mostly things you can feel and hear, and that is exactly what makes them tangible for you as a buyer. The four lead symptoms are stiff or notchy shifting, a grinding or grating during the gear change, a gear that jumps out on its own, and a clutch that no longer has a clear bite point. Each of them points to a different component.

Stiff or notchy shifting means that a gear only engages with noticeable resistance, or not cleanly at all. As long as the gearbox is cold, a certain stiffness is normal, because the oil is still thick; if the resistance does not disappear after a few minutes, something is wrong. The cause can be worn synchro rings, a worn shift linkage or a clutch that does not fully disengage. A grinding or grating at the exact moment of engagement is the classic sign of worn synchro rings: the synchronisation is meant to match the speeds of the gearbox input and the target gear before the gears mesh — if the ring is worn, the gears scrape against each other and you hear the metallic grinding. Especially telling is the quick change from second to third gear under brisk acceleration; this is where tired synchro rings show up first.

A gear that jumps out on its own under load is a serious finding. If you accelerate and the engaged gear unexpectedly jumps back into neutral, the shift sleeves, shift forks or bearings are usually worn — a repair that requires opening the gearbox and becomes expensive accordingly. Test this deliberately under power and on the overrun, that is when applying throttle and when lifting off in the respective gear, because when coasting without load the gear often stays in obediently. Finally, you check the clutch via the bite point: it should sit clearly and reproducibly in the middle of the pedal travel. If it sits very high, almost at the top, the friction material has worn far down. If the clutch slips when you apply a little throttle on a hill and let it in slowly — the revs climb but the car does not pull accordingly — the wear is already advanced. A rattle or squeal with the clutch pedal pressed while stationary points to a defective release bearing.

Chapter 3

Automatic, DSG and CVT: jerking, shocks and delay

Self-shifting transmissions give you no feedback through hand or foot, but through the driving behaviour — and the warning signs are different from those on a manual gearbox. The most important ones are jerking or hard shocks when shifting, a noticeable delay when engaging D or R, spinning up without traction, an active limp-home mode, and burnt or dark transmission fluid. These symptoms apply in principle to all three designs, even though the torque-converter automatic, the dual-clutch transmission and the continuously variable CVT are technically built in different ways.

Jerking or hard shocks when shifting are the most common alarm sign. A healthy torque-converter automatic shifts so smoothly that you barely notice the gear changes; a noticeable jolt or even a shock when shifting up or down points to worn clutch packs, worn or wrong fluid, or a problem in the transmission control. On a DSG, damage often shows up as jerking or hesitation at low speeds, for example when pulling away or in stop-and-go traffic, because this is where the two clutches and the mechatronics are stressed the most. A CVT, in turn, should pull up seamlessly and without any perceptible shift points; jerking, a rattle or a feeling like slipping power transmission are to be taken seriously here.

The noticeable delay when engaging a drive position is a particularly telling test, which you do while stationary. If you shift from N to D or to R with the engine running and the brake pressed, traction should engage after a short, gentle moment. If it takes several seconds until the car "locks in", or the traction comes with a distinct jolt, that speaks for wear on the clutches or for oil pressure that is too low or worn out. Spinning up without traction describes the case where the engine revs shoot up when accelerating, but the vehicle does not accelerate accordingly — the transmission "slips", the power does not reach the road. This is one of the clearest indications of a serious internal fault. If the transmission drops into a limp-home mode while driving — recognisable by the fact that it stays in a fixed gear, no longer shifts and often shows a warning light — the control has detected a fault and is protecting the component; that is an immediate reason to walk away from the purchase.

One signal many people overlook is the transmission fluid itself, provided it is accessible on the design in question. Fresh automatic fluid is usually reddish and clear; dark, brown fluid with a scorched smell indicates overheating and clutch wear. Because the fluid condition is not readily checkable on every transmission, this assessment, together with the fault memory, belongs to the core of the professional inspection.

How to test the transmission specifically on the test drive

The key insight up front: a short lap around town almost never finds transmission damage. The telling symptoms need load, various engine speeds and the comparison between cold and warm condition. So plan a longer drive with mixed conditions and work deliberately through the following steps, instead of letting the seller drive you along a fixed route.

Start with the transmission cold. Ask for the vehicle not to be pre-warmed, and make the first gear changes right after starting: some faults, such as notchy shifting or a jerk when pulling away, only show up in the cold state and disappear after warming up — which is exactly why some sellers warm the car up beforehand. Then drive it warm and repeat the critical tests, because other symptoms, such as a slipping automatic transmission, only appear at operating temperature. That way you cover both windows.

On the manual gearbox you shift through all the gears under load one by one, each one deliberately engaged, including reverse. Watch for resistance, grinding and the cleanness of the engagement. Deliberately provoke the quick two-to-three change under acceleration for the synchro rings. In every gear, under power and when lifting off, briefly rest your hand loosely on the shift lever without guiding it, and watch whether a gear jumps out. For the clutch you pull away on a hill and test the bite point as well as the slipping. On the automatic, DSG or CVT you first do the stationary test — shifting from N to D and to R with the brake pressed and judging the delay until traction. While driving, you then accelerate hard through the mid rev range and watch for shocks, jerking and spinning up, brake down again and observe the downshift. Transmission fluid history and fault memory: the hard evidence

What you learn on the test drive is the subjective impression. Two objective sources complement it and separate mere suspicion from a finding: the maintenance history of the transmission fluid and the fault memory. Both belong to every serious transmission inspection, precisely because transmission damage is so expensive that the effort of proving it almost always pays off.

The transmission fluid history says a lot about the expected service life. For a long time automatic transmission fluid was considered a "lifetime" fill that never needs changing — but in practice the fluid ages, loses its properties and carries wear particles over time. A vehicle whose transmission fluid was changed at sensible intervals and where that is backed by an invoice statistically stands better than one whose fluid was never touched over its entire life. Take the service booklet and the workshop invoices and look specifically for entries on the transmission fluid or transmission service. If there is no entry at all at high mileage, that is not proof of damage, but it is a risk factor you factor into the assessment. On a manual gearbox the oil change is scheduled less often, yet here too a documented service is a good sign.

The fault memory is the second hard source. Modern transmissions have their own control unit that logs faults — for example on shift pressure, temperature or individual clutches. Reading it over the OBD interface makes sporadic faults and an active limp-home mode visible that stay hidden on a short lap. Watch out for the opposite too: a conspicuously "clean" memory on a visibly well-used vehicle can mean that someone cleared the faults just before the sale. Why transmission damage often ends the purchase

Transmission damage is right at the top of the ranking of the most expensive repairs — on a par with engine damage and regularly more expensive than any wear repair on brakes, suspension or exhaust. The reason lies in the design: a transmission is a complex, sealed unit with many precision-made internal parts. If the damage is on the inside — worn clutch packs on an automatic, worn-out bearings, defective synchro rings, a defective mechatronics unit on a DSG — it can rarely be fixed with a small part. Often the choice is between an elaborate repair, a replacement gearbox and an expensive new unit, each with considerable removal and labour effort.

It is exactly this order of magnitude that makes a transmission finding the classic reason to walk away on a used-car purchase. While a tired set of brake pads or a rusted-through exhaust can be priced into the deal, a confirmed transmission fault often shifts the maths so far that the vehicle is no longer worth its purchase price.
