At first glance, the clutch and brakes look like two completely different jobs — one transmits force, the other destroys it. For a used-car purchase, though, they share three properties that make them a pair: both are wear items with a limited lifespan, both are safety-relevant, and with both you can assess the condition surprisingly well before buying, if you know what to look for.

The decisive point is that this is predictable wear, not hidden damage. A clutch that gets tired at 140,000 kilometres is neither fraud nor a deal-breaker — it is a cost factor that you know about and price in. Chapter 2

Checking the clutch: the test under load is the most honest

The clutch of a manual gearbox wears because every time you pull away two friction surfaces slide against each other until they grip. Over the years the lining becomes thinner — and at some point it no longer transmits the full engine power. The most meaningful test for this is the load test, and you can carry it out yourself on the test drive.

How to test for slipping: put the car in a high gear at low revs — say fourth or fifth gear at around 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. Then floor the accelerator. With a healthy clutch, the forward drive follows the throttle: the revs rise and the car accelerates evenly with them. If the clutch slips, the two suddenly decouple — the revs shoot up without the car accelerating accordingly. The engine spins, but the power does not reach the road. This is the clearest single signal of a worn clutch and cannot be argued away.

The second important indicator is the bite point — the pedal position at which the clutch starts to grip. Pull away gently and pay attention to where in the pedal travel the car begins to move. If this point sits right at the top, almost at the very end of the pedal travel just before your foot has let the pedal fully out, that points to a heavily worn clutch: because the lining has become thinner, the mechanism only engages late. A bite point in the middle range is unremarkable, one right at the top is a warning sign — especially if it coincides with slipping under load.

On top of that, watch for three accompanying symptoms that round out the finding. Judder when pulling away — a shudder or jerky stuttering while the clutch grips — points to unevenly worn lining, oil on the clutch disc or problems with the engine mounts. A heavy or notchy pedal that moves stiffly, sticky or with catches instead of gliding cleanly through suggests a problem with the actuation — cable, slave cylinder or release bearing. And a burnt, acrid smell after several pull-aways or an uphill drive is the smell of overheated clutch lining: a clear sign that the clutch is already past its peak or was just being mistreated.

A tired clutch lining can be replaced without the whole gearbox suffering — nevertheless the replacement is labour-intensive, because the gearbox has to be removed for it, and therefore noticeably expensive. What matters is the interpretation: a high bite point on its own in a vehicle with very high mileage is normal wear that you price in. Slipping under load, on the other hand, means the replacement is imminent — and that is a different negotiating lever.

Chapter 3

Checking the brakes part 1: behaviour on the test drive

The brakes are the most safety-critical system on the vehicle, and at the same time the one with the most signals you can check yourself. The first part of the brake check runs on the test drive — that is where you see how the system actually works — while the second part (the following section) concerns the visible condition of pads, discs and fluid when stationary.

Deceleration and stopping distance: on a clear, safe stretch, carry out several braking manoeuvres from various speeds. The deceleration must set in firmly and evenly, and the car should come to a stop in a noticeable and predictable way. A vehicle that only decelerates weakly despite firm pedal pressure or needs a conspicuously long stopping distance has a serious problem — ranging from glazed pads through a defective brake booster to air in the system.

Pulling to one side: brake deliberately hard once on level ground and keep a loose grip on the steering. If the car pulls to the left or right when braking, the brakes are working unevenly — typically due to a sticking brake caliper, unequal pad thicknesses or a brake partially seized on one wheel. This is not just wear but an acute safety issue, because the vehicle veers off course in an emergency stop.

Judder and pulsing: if the pedal or the steering wheel vibrates in a steady rhythm when braking, the brake discs are very likely warped — they no longer have a flat friction surface, and the pad jumps minimally with every rotation. You feel this especially clearly when braking from higher speed, for example after a stretch of country road. Warped discs usually mean that the discs and, to match, the pads have to be replaced.

Squealing and grinding: here you have to clearly separate two noises. Squealing when braking is common and often harmless — it comes from the composition of some pads or from light surface rust on the discs, but it can also be a built-in wear warning signalling that the pads are getting thin. A metallic grinding on the other hand — metal on metal, a grating scrape — is an alarm signal: then the pads are completely worn down and the backing plate is grinding on the disc. This destroys the disc and dramatically lengthens the stopping distance.

ABS behaviour: if the traffic situation safely allows it — empty road, no traffic behind you — you can deliberately trigger the ABS by really stamping hard on the brake once. It should announce itself through a noticeable, rhythmic pulsing in the pedal, and the vehicle must remain stable and steerable while doing so. If the ABS warning light stays on afterwards or the brake behaves unusually, there is a fault in the system.

Chapter 4

Checking the brakes part 2: the visible condition when stationary

What you feel on the test drive you supplement, when stationary, with a direct look at the wear parts. Many of them you can see through the spokes of the wheel, without the wheel having to be taken off — and it is precisely these visible values that are the hardest arguments for the price negotiation.

Pad thickness: through the wheel, take a look at the brake pads that press against the disc from both sides. A new pad is several millimetres thick; the closer the friction lining gets to the metal backing plate, the less reserve is left. If only a thin strip of pad is still visible, a change is due soon. Visibly bare metal at the contact point means the pad is already worn through — then you have to act immediately.

Disc thickness, wear lip and rust grooves: the brake disc wears along with it — it gets thinner with every pad change. You can recognise this by the wear lip: a ridge you can feel on the outer edge of the disc, which the pad leaves standing because it only wears down the inner surface. The more pronounced this ridge, the more material the disc has already lost. Also watch for deep rust grooves and scoring on the friction surface: a brownish film of rust that wipes away after the first brake applications is normal standing rust and harmless. Deep, circular grooves or a pitted, rust-eaten surface, on the other hand, belong to a spent disc. If the vehicle has stood for a long time and has deep rust pitting on the friction surface that remains even after several brake applications, the disc is due.

Brake fluid — level and age: this is the point almost every buyer overlooks, and that is exactly why it is so valuable. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning: over the years it draws water out of the surrounding air. As the water content rises, the boiling point drops — and under heavy braking load, for example on a long downhill run, the moist fluid can boil locally. Then vapour bubbles form, the pedal suddenly goes soft and the braking effect fades. That is why brake fluid needs changing regularly, regardless of mileage. Check two things: does the fluid in the reservoir sit between the Min and Max markings, and when was it last changed? A clearly too-low level should be seen in connection with thin pads (then the level drops by design), or it points to a leak. If you find no documented change in the service book for years, that is a concrete, cheaply remedied item you can raise.

Parking brake: finally, check the handbrake or the electronic parking brake. With the classic handbrake, what counts is whether it holds the car securely on a slight incline and whether the lever travel does not rise too far before it grips — a very long travel points to stretched cables or worn rear brakes. With the electronic version, you apply it at the switch, watch for clean application and release, and make sure no error message appears.

Chapter 5

Why both belong in the price negotiation

The real value of this inspection lies not in rejecting a vehicle, but in translating the actual condition into a fair price. Clutch and brakes are wear items with a foreseeable end of life — the fact that they will eventually be due is no surprise but planned for. The only question is: who pays for the next replacement, you or the seller?

That is why the decisive mindset is: impending wear is a price reduction, not a reason to walk away. If the clutch slips under load or the brake discs judder, you know the replacement is coming soon — and because both repairs cost noticeable money, you have a concrete, technically sound argument to push the price down. A seller who knows you did the slip test and saw the thin pads through the wheel negotiates differently from one to whom you only express a vague gut feeling.

This is exactly where a solid finding parts ways with a guess. "The brakes seem worn" is negotiable. "The front pads are near the wear limit, the discs have a clear wear lip, the brake fluid has not been changed in years according to the book, and the clutch slips in fifth gear under full load" is a price conversation with facts. The concrete repair costs vary greatly by model, drivetrain and effort — as a rough guide, a brake set per axle is manageable, while a clutch replacement is much more expensive because of the necessary gearbox removal. And because both are safety-relevant at the same time, the finding has a second dimension: with the clutch, slipping is initially a cost and breakdown risk, while with the brakes it is directly about the stopping distance. A car that pulls, warped discs or old, water-laden brake fluid are not cosmetics — in an emergency they lengthen the stopping distance or let the vehicle break away. A vehicle with such findings is not one you buy "as it stands", but with a clear agreement on who repairs the safety-critical parts.

Chapter 6

Where your self-check reaches its limit

As far as you get with a test drive, a look through the wheel and a hand on the brake fluid reservoir — at one point the layperson's inspection ends. Without the wheel off and a calliper gauge, the exact remaining thickness of pad and disc cannot be reliably determined; the remaining pad thickness in millimetres and the disc's distance from the minimum dimension are measured values, not an estimate through the wheel. The age and water content of the brake fluid, too, can only be pinned down objectively with a test device rather than deduced from the service book.

With the clutch it is similar: the slip test reliably shows you that it is at the end — but how much service life a clutch that is in the borderline zone still has is not revealed by any single driving impression. And whether judder comes from the clutch disc, from oil on the lining or from the engine mounts often cannot be clearly attributed without a visual inspection of the removed part or on the lift.
