That exhaust stream is exactly the problem: it carries soot and oil mist, which build up on the valve and in the passage. After years the valve cokes up, seizes or no longer closes cleanly — the classic diesel weak point that can cost you dearly on a used purchase.
Whether the valve sticks open or closed determines the pattern of complaints, and you should tell the two apart. If it sticks permanently open, too much exhaust gas flows into the intake: the engine gets too little fresh air, power is lacking, it hesitates under throttle and the idle turns rough. - Frequent or never-completed regenerations — recognisable by unexpectedly high consumption, a hot, smelly exhaust when stationary and a fan that keeps running after switching off.
- Limp mode and reduced power when the soot load exceeds a critical threshold.
- Raised oil level: with aborted regenerations, fuel can accumulate in the engine oil — an oil level risen above the maximum mark is a serious warning signal.
The expensive consequence stands at the end of this chain. If the filter is mechanically blocked or saturated with ash, no normal regeneration helps anymore. Then the only options are either a forced regeneration at a workshop, where the filter is burned clean under controlled conditions, or — if that no longer works — replacing the filter. A new DPF is one of the costliest single components in the exhaust system. Add to that the fact that a constantly overloaded filter is often just the symptom of another fault, such as a poor combustion pattern caused by faulty injectors or precisely a seized EGR valve that drives up soot output. Read out the fault memory via OBD. This is the hardest evidence and the only way to make intermittent EGR faults and the DPF history visible. An OBD diagnostic tool on the diagnostic port shows active and stored fault codes — codes relating to exhaust gas recirculation, the differential pressure sensor or the particulate filter are clear warning signals. But watch the flip side: a suspiciously "clean" memory on a visibly well-used car can mean someone cleared the faults shortly before the sale. On a clear stretch, accelerate hard through the mid rev range and watch whether the engine hesitates, has a flat spot or drops into limp mode. Repeat load changes — throttle on, throttle off, accelerate again — and observe whether the power comes in evenly. If the car noticeably drops into reduced power during the drive and a warning light comes on at the same time, that's an active warning signal, not a coincidence.
Observe the exhaust behaviour. Get out and let the engine work under load while you watch the exhaust from a few metres away. Persistent black soot when accelerating points to incomplete combustion, as caused by a seized EGR valve. A conspicuously smelly, very hot exhaust when stationary can indicate a DPF regeneration currently running or aborted. Brief white vapour in cold weather, on the other hand, is condensation and harmless — don't confuse it with a defect.
Service history and short-trip profile. Take the service booklet and workshop invoices in hand and look specifically for entries on EGR cleaning, EGR replacement, DPF forced regeneration or filter replacement — such entries show the vehicle has already had relevant issues. Ask the seller directly about the usage profile: mostly short trips in the city is a risk on a diesel, a lot of long-distance driving points to a filter under less strain.
