How do I spot water damage on a used car?

Water damage has two very different causes, which you need to keep apart early on. The harmless case is a localised leak: a blocked water drain, a brittle door or sunroof seal, causing moisture in the footwell or boot, a musty smell and fogged-up windows. The serious case is a car that stood in a flood. That gives itself away in places overlooked during cleaning: a waterline or mud rings under the carpet, in the spare-wheel well and in the fuse box; dirt and moisture when you pull the seatbelts out to the stop; fine corrosion on bare metal parts and plug connectors; and a mouldy smell masked with perfume. The reason for caution: water in the electronics is a creeping long-term damage — contacts keep corroding over months and produce sporadic faults that only surface long after the purchase. Chapter 1

Two completely different cases — and why you have to keep them apart

Moisture in a car is not all the same. The range runs from a blocked drain that a workshop clears in half an hour, to a car that stood fully submerged and whose electrics slowly fall apart over years. There are worlds in between — in price, in risk and in what is coming your way.

The first case is a leak: water gets in at one spot where it does not belong. That is annoying, often musty, but as a rule repairable and no reason to write off an otherwise good car — provided the cause is found and fixed before rust or mould take hold. The second case is the serious one: a former high-water or flood vehicle. After floods, such cars are often dried on the surface, cleaned, perfumed and sold cheaply far from the disaster area — the price looks like a bargain, but inside the car is a restoration case.

The reason you absolutely have to keep these two cases apart: on the surface they look almost the same. Both smell musty, in both the windows can fog up, in both you find moisture in the footwell. The difference lies in the hidden places and in the history. That is exactly where this guide starts — first the leak, then the worst case.

Chapter 2

Case 1: The leak — where water gets in

The common, harmless case: water gets in at one defined spot. Before you go hunting for the cause, confirm the suspicion with your nose and hand — if you get in and it smells clammy and mouldy, that is your starting signal. Then it is about narrowing down the source, because that decides how involved the repair will be.

By far the most common cause is blocked water drains. Cars are full of little drain channels that deliberately carry off any water: in the plenum chamber below the windscreen, in the corners of the sunroof, along the lower door edges and at the air-conditioning condensate drain. Leaves, pollen and dirt clog these channels over the years. When the water can no longer drain, it finds its way inside — with the sunroof over the headliner into the A-pillar and the footwell, with the plenum chamber straight into the passenger footwell. A blocked air-con condensate drain shows up as a puddle in the front footwell precisely when the air conditioning has been running.

The second group is faulty seals. Door, sunroof and tailgate seals go hard, cracked or deformed over the years and no longer seal cleanly. At the tailgate, the cable grommets and the bonded seams of the rear lights are also typical entry points — water then runs into the spare-wheel well. Check the rubber seals all round for cracks, flattened spots and gaps, and note whether a seal has already been replaced or re-glued.

Here is how to track down the moisture concretely: at all four seats lift the floor mats and press firmly with your flat hand into the carpet and the insulation beneath it — wet insulation feels clammy and gives off water under pressure, whereas a superficially damp mat says nothing about what is underneath. Open the boot, lift the floor mat and look into the spare-wheel well; if there is standing water or a film of condensation, you have either a leak at the tailgate or a sunroof problem. Sit inside with the air conditioning running and watch whether the inside of the windows fogs up or stays permanently misted — persistent fogging and headlights milky from the inside are a sign of lasting moisture in the car.

Chapter 3

Case 2: The flood vehicle — the serious case

Now the case that should tip a purchase over: a car that stood in a flood or a flooded underpass. The seller will not tell you, and the usual visual checks come up empty, because the outside has been washed and the inside vacuumed and perfumed. The decisive point: water leaves a waterline behind — up to what height it stood in the vehicle — and you can find that line in places nobody cleans completely.

The most telling spot is the seatbelts. Slowly pull each belt out of the retractor to the absolute stop — the last section that never comes into view in everyday use. At this hidden end a flood vehicle reveals what the rest conceals: a dirty-brown discolouration, fine mud between the fibres, a clear moisture boundary or a mouldy smell right on the webbing. A clean belt at the upper section and a dirty, clammy lower end is one of the clearest flood indicators there is.

You go through the other hidden spots just as systematically. Pull up the floor carpet at one corner and shine a light underneath: mud rings, a fine film of sediment or a visible dry-tide line on the floor pan do not belong there. Open the spare-wheel well fully and look for mud, a waterline and rust on otherwise bare metal. Unscrew or unclip the cover of the fuse box and look at the contacts and relays — corrosion, verdigris or a dirt ring in the box is a hard warning sign, because water reached the electrics here. And also: shine a light under the seats, look into the door cavities, check the glovebox and the rear side panels. Wherever standing water deposits sediment, a trace stays behind.

Two further signals round out the picture. First, corrosion on bare metal parts and plug connectors: a fine, even film of rust on screws, seat rails, pedal linkages and the bare metal edges under the trim does not come from normal ageing, but from getting wet over a wide area. Pull any plug connectors you can reach and look for greenish or whitish deposits on the pins. Second, the smell: a musty base note overlaid by an intense air freshener or cabin perfume is more suspicious than an honest mouldy smell — anyone who perfumes heavily often wants to drown something out.

Chapter 4

Why water in the electronics is the expensive long-term damage

The core of the problem with a flood vehicle lies not in the wet carpet, which can be dried, but in the electronics — and the insidious feature is that the damage does not appear at once but creeps in over months and years. That is exactly why such a car still seems ready to drive when you buy it and reveals its full extent only once you have long owned it.

A modern car is threaded through with control units, sensors, connectors and wiring harnesses — in the footwell, under the seats, behind the trim, some of it deep in the underbody. When the car stands in water, moisture penetrates these plug connections and the housings of the control units. Even if everything is dried afterwards, residues remain in the contacts: minerals from the dirty water and trapped residual moisture. A corrosion process then begins on the bare metal pins of the connectors that no longer stops — the contact surfaces slowly fur up, the contact resistance rises, and at some point the connection is disrupted.

This shows up as sporadic electronic faults: warning lights that come and go, a window regulator that works sometimes and sometimes not, drop-outs on sensors, jumpy readings, driver-assistance systems that switch off for no reason. The treacherous part is that these faults wander and are hard to nail down — today at this connector, in a month at another, because the corrosion is working at many places at once. A workshop replaces one control unit, and half a year later the next one fails. The repair thus turns into an endless loop.

That also answers the cost question, qualitatively: a single blocked drain is a manageable workshop item. A soaked car with progressing contact corrosion is the opposite — the sum of control units, wiring harnesses, sensors and connectors can quickly exceed the car's residual value, and because the faults appear one after another, you keep paying in instalments. That is why a flood vehicle is almost never a good deal, even at half the market price.

Chapter 5

What you should do if you suspect it

If you have found one or more of the serious signs — a mud ring under the carpet, a dirty belt end, corrosion in the fuse box, a perfumed mouldy smell — then it is no longer about negotiating but about protecting yourself. A single weak indicator can be harmless; the combination of several is a clear stop signal.

First the fault memory. Have the OBD memory read out — a flood vehicle often shows a whole string of faults across different systems that have nothing to do with each other, plus indications of disrupted communication between control units. Just as revealing is a conspicuously empty, freshly cleared memory: whoever wiped all the codes shortly before the sale had a reason. A diagnostic device recognises and interprets both; the naked eye does not.

Second, document the moisture traces. Photograph everything that stands out — the belt end, the spare-wheel well, the fuse box, the plug connectors — with a close-up and an overview. These photos are your basis for negotiation and, in case of doubt, your evidence, because a deceitfully concealed flood damage can make the purchase contract voidable. Proving it after the fact is hard, so what you capture before the purchase is what counts.

Third, the origin and history. Ask specifically where the car comes from and where it was registered — a vehicle from a known high-water region, or one conspicuously far from its current location, deserves suspicion. Check the papers for a recent change of owner or region, and ask to see the service history. A sudden gap or a fresh start of the documentation fits the pattern.
