What is the sports-car inspection from checkdenwagen?

The sports-car inspection is a specialised on-site pre-purchase inspection for performance vehicles — developed for buyers looking to purchase a Porsche 911, a BMW M3, a Mercedes-AMG or a comparable high-performance vehicle who don't want to risk a blind spot. checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of on-site used-car inspections operating Germany-wide, based in Berlin and backed by a network of inspectors all across Germany. An experienced automotive appraiser from this network travels to the vehicle's location, examines it systematically against a checklist of over 100 points, and delivers a digital photo report with all findings within 24 hours. The sports-car inspection goes considerably deeper than a standard used-car check: track-day detection based on telemetry traces, brake-pad characteristics and tyre-wear patterns; assessment of clutch wear on manuals; analysis of the suspension for lowering and coilover installation; a complete service history and service intervals as an indicator of performance use. The price depends on the vehicle type and location and is quoted individually on request — because sports-car inspections are not a one-size-fits-all product.

The critical weak points when buying a sports car

Paint & stone chips at the front

Sports cars are driven low and fast. The front end — bonnet, front spoiler, sills — takes considerably more stone chipping on motorway and country-road driving than an ordinary car. The tiniest impact points are barely visible to the naked eye, yet an ideal starting point for later corrosion. Our inspector measures paint thicknesses to the millimetre and documents every impact photographically.

Underbody & spoilers: kerb and ramp damage

The low ground clearance of sports cars is their greatest enemy in everyday use. Kerbs, underground-garage entrances and steep ramps leave scrape and crack damage on spoilers, sills and the underbody that the listing never mentions. We systematically check the underbody, front and rear spoilers and side skirts for contact marks and structural damage.

Tyres & brakes: wear and DOT date

High-performance tyres on a sports car often have a lifespan of less than 20,000 km — even if the vehicle has covered only 30,000 km in total. A tyre change shortly before the sale conveniently disguises the actual intensity of use. We check the DOT production date, the wear pattern (cornering-loaded vs. even), brake-pad thickness and brake-disc condition in all four wheel wells.

Clutch (manual) & dual-clutch

A worn clutch in a Porsche 911 GT3 or BMW M3 quickly costs several thousand euros. On manuals we check the bite point, slip behaviour and acoustic abnormalities. On dual-clutch gearboxes (PDK, DCT, S tronic) we look for shift jolts, shift hesitation and fault-memory entries — typical early signs of gearbox wear from aggressive use.

Detecting track-day use

Many sports-car buyers have no idea that their dream car has been driven dozens of times around the Nordschleife or at sport-driver training. Direct evidence: asymmetric tyre wear from extreme lateral acceleration, heat-soaked brake discs with characteristic hot spots, OBD entries about stability-system deactivations, and telemetry remnants in navigation or diagnostic systems. We know where to look.

Complete service history & inspections

Sports cars require tighter service intervals than average vehicles — often 15,000 km or 12 months, sometimes shorter. A patchy service booklet on a performance vehicle is no cosmetic blemish but a serious warning sign: skipped engine-oil and filter changes, missed gearbox-oil services and overdue timing-belt changes are considerably riskier on hard-driven vehicles than on ordinary cars.

Tuning & chip-tuning traces

Aftermarket modifications on sports cars range from harmless visual upgrades to engine-side risky chip-tuning measures. We check the control unit for altered software versions, compare the maps we read out against the manufacturer parameters and inspect the engine and exhaust system for non-standard components. Important: tuning must be disclosed to the buyer before the contract is signed.

Tyre age despite low mileage

Sports cars with few kilometres per year — the modern-day garage classics — often have tyres that show little tread wear but, due to ageing (ozone, UV, temperature cycling), are porous and prone to failure deep inside. The DOT date on the tyre sidewall reveals the true age. Tyres older than six to eight years are a safety risk — regardless of tread depth.

Cold-run behaviour & engine noises

High-revving sports-car engines — naturally aspirated units like the Porsche boxer or BMW straight-six, but also forced-induction ones — show wear first during the cold run: chain rattle, valve clatter and a persistent oil-pressure issue in the first seconds after start are diagnostically more valuable than the engine running at operating temperature. We insist on the cold start and take the time a reputable inspector needs for it.

Suspension & coilovers

Lowering springs and coilovers are widespread on sports cars — and not every installation is done properly. Incorrect camber and toe settings lead to one-sided tyre wear and increased suspension wear. We assess shock absorbers for oil leakage, track rods for play, axle joints for wear, and document every indication of altered suspension geometry.

What the sports-car inspection covers

Specialised performance inspection

Over 100 checkpoints, extended with sports-car-specific checks: track-day indicators, clutch and gearbox assessment, DOT tyre age and suspension geometry. No standard template, but an inspection tailored to performance vehicles.

Paint-thickness measurement & accident diagnosis

Digital ultrasonic paint-thickness measurement on all body panels — documented as a heatmap. Repaints, filler over accident damage and partial respraying after stone chips are reliably detectable this way, even when the surface polish looks flawless.

OBD diagnostics & control-unit analysis

Reading out the fault memory in engine, gearbox, ABS, DSC and driver-assistance control units. Checking readiness codes for cleared entries. Where chip tuning is suspected: comparing software versions against manufacturer parameters. Odometer plausibility check included.

Digital report within 24 hours

A complete photo report with annotated findings, paint-thickness heatmap, OBD readout and a rating for each inspection category — within 24 hours of the on-site inspection, by email. Ready to use as a basis for price negotiations or for walking away from the purchase.

Independent & with no sales interest

Our inspector has no interest in the purchase going through. He works exclusively for you — no commissions, no closeness to the dealer or seller. Whatever he finds goes into the report unfiltered.

Track-day & intensive-use detection

Analysis for track-day evidence: brake-disc heat patterns, asymmetric tyre wear, telemetry entries and software history pointing to sporty driving profiles. What's invisible in photos is searched for systematically on-site.

Document & history check

Service booklet, registration documents, workshop invoices and service records are checked for completeness, plausibility and consistency. Gaps in a sports car's service history carry a different weight than in an everyday car.

Test drive & cold-start analysis

Cold-start protocol for acoustic diagnosis in the first seconds of operation, a test drive under load for gearbox, clutch, steering and brakes. High-revving naturally aspirated engines reveal wear during the cold run — the window many sellers prefer to avoid.

What the sports-car inspection cannot do

The sports-car inspection is a purchase-oriented condition assessment by an experienced automotive appraiser — not an official expert report and no substitute for the roadworthiness test (HU) or a TÜV valuation report. It makes no legally binding statement about the vehicle's value and is not suitable as evidence in an ongoing legal dispute. Not part of the standard sports-car inspection is a full engine teardown or the endoscopy of cylinders — where there is a concrete suspicion of engine damage, such additional services can be arranged separately. Gearbox-oil analyses and body-jig (chassis straightening bench) checks are likewise available on request, but are not included in the basic scope. Rule of thumb: if you're buying a Porsche 911, a BMW M3, a Mercedes-AMG or a similar performance vehicle and want to know what's really under the skin before you sign, the sports-car inspection is the right tool. For vehicles in the supercar segment — Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren — we recommend the specialised supercar inspection with an extended scope. Call us, our advice is free: 030 301 32 327.

How your sports-car inspection works

Enquiry & individual coordination

Tell us the listing, the vehicle's location and your most important questions. Because sports-car inspections are configured individually — scope, particular points of suspicion, any additional services — we agree the process and the price with you in advance. No rigid booking form, no standard package.

Frequently asked questions about the sports-car inspection

Sports cars are driven differently, serviced differently and wear differently than ordinary cars. A standard used-car inspection is designed for average vehicles and knows neither the typical weak points of a Porsche boxer engine nor the track-day indicators left behind by a hard-driven BMW M3. The sports-car inspection is specifically calibrated for performance vehicles: track-day detection, clutch assessment, suspension geometry and tyre-age analysis are all part of the checklist.

Buying a sports car blind — you don't have to.

An undetected track-day damage, a hidden clutch weakness or undisclosed chip tuning can quickly cost more than the inspection itself. Ask us — our advice is free and without obligation.
