Where is the VIN on a Mazda?

You'll find the VIN of a Mazda in five possible places. The most common point of reference is the bottom-left corner of the windshield at the dashboard, readable from outside through the front glass. In the engine bay the VIN is stamped on a chassis rail or a plate near the radiator. On the driver's-side door pillar there's a sticker with the full VIN. On the B-pillar, many Mazda models carry an additional stamping. In the vehicle documents the VIN appears in field E of Part I of the registration document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) and in full in Part II (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II / Fahrzeugbrief). Nearly all Mazda vehicles destined for Europe are built in Japan and carry the WMI code JMZ. An exception is joint-venture-built vehicles of older model years, where other codes may appear.

All VIN positions on the Mazda in detail

Mazda consistently adheres to the international standard for VIN placement and complements it with model-specific details. The windshield is the first place to check: in the bottom-left corner the stamped plate is visible without opening any door. In the engine bay the exact location varies by model year and model: on the Mazda CX-5 and Mazda3 of the newer generations, the VIN is often found on the left chassis rail near the cowl. On the MX-5 it should be looked for in the area of the chassis rails ahead of the firewall. The door-pillar sticker on Mazda vehicles is often printed in three languages and, alongside the VIN, also contains weight specifications. When buying a used car, the authenticity of the sticker is an important indicator: any visible tampering with this sticker should prompt a careful cross-check of all the other VIN positions. The B-pillar is especially relevant if the vehicle has had a side-impact accident — a missing or retrofitted stamping on the B-pillar is a clear finding pointing to a major repair. On modern Mazda vehicles from model year 2014 onward, the VIN can also be read out of the control unit via an OBD diagnostic device.

What does your Mazda's WMI code reveal?

WMI codeMeaning
JMZMazda, built in Japan — nearly all Mazda models destined for Europe carry this code: Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3, CX-5, CX-60, MX-5. The J stands for Japan as the production region.

Particularities of the VIN on Mazda

Mazda builds nearly all of its production models for the European market at its main plant in Hiroshima, Japan, as well as at the engine plant in Hofu. The WMI code JMZ is therefore standard on current Mazda models in Europe and, on its own, no warning sign. Older Mazda models produced in joint ventures with Ford or other manufacturers — for example certain Mazda versions of the Ford Probe or the jointly developed Mazda 323/Ford Escort of particular years — may carry different WMI codes, as they were not built in Mazda's own plants. On current Mazda vehicles, a WMI that is not JMZ should immediately prompt investigation. The model year from position 10 of the VIN is, on Mazda as on all Japanese manufacturers, generally coded according to the ISO 3779 scheme. In Europe the stated model year can differ from the date of first registration by up to a year, because Mazda produces certain models in the year before the registration year. The date of first registration in the vehicle registration document is always the more reliable reference. On the Mazda MX-30 (electric and range extender) the VIN contains no battery information. This data is accessible only via OBD diagnostics.
