On a Mercedes-Benz the VIN appears in several physical locations. The quickest one to find is the lower left corner of the windshield on the driver's side, readable from outside without any tools. In the engine bay the VIN on a Mercedes-Benz is typically stamped on the firewall or on the left chassis rail. On the door jamb or B-pillar of the driver's side there is a sticker or data plate. A characteristic compared with other brands: Mercedes-Benz often additionally places the VIN in the trunk — frequently under the trunk trim or on a piece of visible sheet metal. In the registration certificate Part I (field E) and Part II (the vehicle title) the VIN is officially recorded. All entries must match character for character.
Where do I find the VIN on a Mercedes-Benz?
The vehicle identification number (VIN, in Germany also called FIN) appears on a Mercedes-Benz in several defined locations — including one feature many people don't know about: Mercedes-Benz often also places the VIN in the trunk and on the B-pillar. If you know all the positions, you can deliberately check whether every entry matches when buying a used car.
Every VIN position on a Mercedes-Benz in detail
The windshield is the first place to check: the VIN sits in the lower left corner on the driver's side, readable from outside without any aids. Many Mercedes models — especially from the mid-range and upper class upwards — have tinted windows that can make reading harder in poor light. A flashlight from the inside helps illuminate the embossed mark. The plate or engraving should look clean and undamaged. In the engine bay the stamped VIN on a Mercedes-Benz is often located on the firewall (the panel between the engine bay and the passenger compartment) or on the left chassis rail. The location varies by model series: older models (before about 2000) often have the stamp set deeper and harder to access. Newer models from the W204 generation onwards (C-Class from 2007) usually have the stamp clearly visible on the firewall. Even depth and a clean surrounding area without grinding marks are signs of an untampered vehicle. On the B-pillar (the body pillar between the front and rear doors) many Mercedes-Benz models have a sticker or data plate. Besides the VIN, this plate also contains the paint code, upholstery code and other vehicle data. The B-pillar as a location is more common on Mercedes-Benz than on other brands. A special feature: Mercedes-Benz additionally places the VIN in the trunk. Depending on the model series, you'll find a sticker under the trunk trim, a data plate on visible sheet metal or a direct stamp there. This additional location makes it easier to cross-check the VIN when other positions are hard to access. In the vehicle documents — registration certificate Part I (field E) and Part II — the VIN is officially recorded. When buying a used car the rule is: have the vehicle title presented first, write down the VIN, then cross-check all stamps on the vehicle character by character.

Mercedes-Benz VIN characteristics — what to watch out for when buying
Mercedes-Benz uses more WMI codes than many other brands, which can be confusing at first when identifying a vehicle. The switch from WDB to WDD and later to W1K, or from WDC to W1N, comes down to changed production standards and internal allocations — not a change in quality. Anyone buying an older vehicle from the 1990s will often find WDB, while newer models from the 2010s onwards carry WDD or WDC. AMG high-performance vehicles can be identified by the WMI code WMX — similar to BMW M models with WBS. A supposed AMG vehicle with a WDD or WDC prefix is not a genuine AMG but a regular Mercedes with a possible AMG styling package. With AMG vehicles, which carry a considerable price premium over the base model, this check is especially important. The extra VIN location in the trunk is a Mercedes-Benz characteristic that helps with a systematic cross-check when the engine-bay stamp is not clearly readable due to dirt or poor accessibility. It depends on the model series and is not present on all models — its absence is no warning sign, but its presence is a useful cross-checking point. When inspecting a used Mercedes-Benz it is advisable to cross-check at least two physical positions as well as the vehicle documents. Any discrepancy — even in a single character — absolutely requires clarification before the purchase.
