checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of on-site used-car inspections operating throughout Germany, based in Berlin with a network of inspectors across the whole country. With the Mazda used-car inspection, understanding the Skyactiv engine generation is central: while the Skyactiv-G petrol is considered one of the most reliable engine families in its class, the Skyactiv-D 2.2 diesel has a systemic weak spot in short-distance operation. If the exhaust temperature stays permanently below the DPF regeneration range, fuel accumulates in the engine oil — the oil level rises, the lubricating effect drops. In the worst case, engine damage follows. Our inspector measures and analyses this risk specifically. On top of that, older Mazda models (before roughly 2015) come with rust findings on the wheel arches, wheel housings and brake lines that are not mentioned in the listing. Clutch wear on manual-gearbox variants, i-ELOOP capacitors and i-stop systems are also among the brand-typical inspection points. Our inspector examines your desired Mazda on-site for about 1.5 hours using an inspection checklist of over 100 points. You receive your report within 24 hours as a clear basis for your buying decision or price negotiation.
Get your used Mazda checked: on-site used-car inspection, from €289
Mazda builds reliable vehicles — but the Skyactiv-D diesel has a documented weak spot that can ruin the engine: oil dilution from short-distance driving. Anyone who has only driven the 2.2 diesel in city traffic risks a raised oil level with a fuel content — and engine damage over the long term. On top of that come DPF clogging, EGR problems and, on older models, rust findings on the wheel arches and brake lines. Our inspector comes directly to the vehicle, checks over 100 points with Mazda-specific priorities and delivers a digital photo report within 24 hours. Fixed price from €289 incl. VAT and travel.
Mazda: character, reliability and the typical buyer
Japanese reliability — with one clear caveat
Mazda stands for high build quality and economical, emotionally designed vehicles. The Skyactiv-G petrol engine (Mazda 2, 3, 6, CX-30, CX-5, MX-5) ranks among the most reliable four-cylinder engines in the used-car segment. The Skyactiv-D 2.2 diesel, on the other hand, requires close attention to the previous owner's usage profile.
Skyactiv-D: short trips are the biggest risk
The Skyactiv-D 2.2 has a particularly high exhaust-gas recirculation rate and an elaborate DPF system. Anyone who mainly drives short distances prevents the active DPF regeneration. Fuel gets into the engine oil — the oil level rises measurably above the MAX mark. Over the long term, this can damage the oil pump and engine bearings. Without an inspection, you're buying a risk that stays invisible in the listing.
Running costs: cheaper than German premium brands
Mazda parts are moderately priced compared with German premium manufacturers. Workshop costs and spare-parts availability are good in Germany. The exception: a DPF replacement, EGR-valve cleaning or replacement and, on older models, welding work on brake lines can quickly run into several hundred to over a thousand euros — especially if you discover these findings after the purchase.
The typical used-car buyer — and the risks
Used Mazda vehicles appeal to buyers looking for Japanese quality combined with modern design. Many CX-5s and Mazda 6s come from company fleets or leasing — often with a mixed driving profile and not always with a complete service booklet. An independent inspection is especially worthwhile on the Skyactiv-D diesel and on older model years before 2015.
Mazda weak spots: what our inspection specifically examines
Skyactiv-D 2.2: oil dilution from fuel ingress
The Skyactiv-D 2.2 (Mazda 3, 6, CX-5, CX-30 diesel, model years from roughly 2012) regenerates its DPF by post-injection — on short trips this regeneration often fails to happen because the exhaust temperature stays too low. Fuel gets into the engine oil: the oil level rises above the MAX mark, and the smell of fuel on the dipstick is a typical warning sign. Over the long term, the diluted oil attacks the bearing shells and the oil pump. Our inspector measures the oil level, assesses the oil consistency and smell, checks the service history for DPF regeneration entries and asks about the vehicle's usage profile.
Skyactiv-D: DPF clogging and EGR-valve wear
A sooted-up diesel particulate filter is closely linked to the usage profile on the Skyactiv-D. Vehicles used predominantly in the city often have a partially or fully clogged DPF that requires an expensive cleaning or replacement. At the same time, the EGR valve wears out due to the high exhaust-gas recirculation rate — typical symptoms are a rough idle, increased fuel consumption and soot particles in the intake tract. Our inspector reads out the DPF load values and EGR-relevant fault codes from the engine control unit and visibly assesses the condition of the intake system.
Rust on older models: wheel arches, wheel housings, brake lines
Mazda historically had weaker corrosion protection on vehicles before roughly 2013 than today's models. Particularly affected: wheel arches and wheel housings (Mazda 3 BK/BL, Mazda 6 GH), underbody brake lines and welds on the sills. Newer models (from roughly 2013) have significantly improved corrosion protection but are not immune to underbody-care shortcomings. Our inspector systematically examines all known rust spots on the lift and documents findings photographically.
i-ELOOP brake-energy recovery: capacitor wear
The i-ELOOP system (Mazda 6, CX-5 from roughly 2013) stores brake energy in a double-layer capacitor (supercap) and thereby relieves the alternator. Over time the capacitor loses capacity — visible from increased fuel consumption and occasional warning indicators in the instrument cluster. A defective i-ELOOP capacitor doesn't cause engine damage, but it does cause repair costs of several hundred euros. Our inspector reads out i-ELOOP-specific diagnostic values and checks the electrical-system behaviour for signs of system failures.
i-stop start-stop system: starter-generator and battery
Mazda's own i-stop system uses the piston position to restart — it is technically more sophisticated than classic start-stop systems and reacts more sensitively to a weakening starter-generator or a no-longer-optimal AGM battery. If the system fails, a warning message appears and the engine starts conventionally via the starter motor. Anyone who ignores this risks premature wear of the starter. Our inspector tests i-stop during driving and checks the charge state of the AGM battery with a measurement.
Clutch: wear on manual-gearbox variants
Mazda vehicles with a manual gearbox — especially the MX-5 (ND, NC) and the sporty versions of the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 — are frequently driven at high revs. Clutch wear is a relevant inspection point on these vehicles. Typical symptoms: the clutch slipping when pulling away, the clutch pedal engaging late, a smell of burnt material. Our inspector systematically checks the clutch behaviour on the test drive and assesses the pedal geometry and engagement point.
Suspension: dampers, control arms and noises
The suspension of the Mazda 3 (BL/BM) and the CX-5 (KE) is considered firmly tuned compared with competitors, which favours wear of the shock absorbers and bushings at higher mileage. Control-arm rubber bushings and strut-top mounts are known wear points that announce themselves through creaking or knocking over bumps. Our inspector systematically checks the suspension on the lift, tests all pivot points with a shake test and assesses the driving behaviour on the test drive.
A/C compressor and air conditioning: refrigerant loss
The air-conditioning compressor is a common wear point on Mazda vehicles with medium mileage. Defective shaft seals lead to a gradual loss of refrigerant — the air conditioning no longer cools sufficiently, without any warning indicator appearing. Our inspector tests the air conditioning for cooling performance, listens to the compressor for rattling or knocking and checks the refrigerant pressure level.
Body: panel gaps, paint measurements and accident traces
Mazda vehicles are rarely offered in the listing with an accident history — in reality, however, many used examples have had paintwork or bodywork repairs. Our inspector measures the paint-layer thickness on all relevant body parts, detects filler work and assesses the panel gaps for symmetry. Conspicuous findings are documented photographically and clearly noted in the report.

Frequently inspected Mazda models at checkdenwagen.de
Most often, our customers commission the Mazda used-car inspection for the CX-5 (KE and KF) — Mazda's best-seller with both petrol and diesel engines and a broad supply on the used market. Next comes the Mazda 3 (BL, BM, BP) with Skyactiv-G petrol engines, considered particularly reliable when run on petrol. The Mazda 6 (GH and GJ) — frequently a Skyactiv-D diesel from fleet use — is the most common case with oil-dilution risk. The Mazda 2 (DJ) appears as a compact city car with the 1.5 Skyactiv-G — here the focus is on clutch wear and suspension. The CX-30, a modern crossover model with Skyactiv-X and Skyactiv-G, is being inspected increasingly often. The MX-5 (NC, ND) is a special case: sports vehicles with an above-average sporty driving style, high clutch wear and specific body inspection points. Whatever the model: our inspector knows the quirks of every series and sets the inspection priorities accordingly.
