A motorhome inspection is a professional, purchase-oriented on-site inspection of a used motorhome by an independent vehicle expert — directly at the seller's or dealer's location, with no sales interest. checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of on-site used-car inspections operating throughout Germany, based in Berlin with a network of inspectors across the country. Motorhomes differ fundamentally from cars: a motorhome is both a vehicle and a living space — with a gas system, fresh-water system, waste-water tank, heating, boiler, solar system and leisure battery. These living-space-specific systems age independently of the mileage and are not checked in any regular roadworthiness test. The biggest hidden defect in used motorhomes is water ingress in the body: moisture behind wall panels and in the floor leads to mould, structural damage and, in the worst case, a write-off. This damage is barely visible from the outside and is regularly left unmentioned in the listing. Our motorhome inspection includes a systematic moisture measurement on walls, floor and roof, as well as the visual gas system inspection, the function test of heating and boiler, and the condition of the solar and on-board power system. The inspection catalogue comprises more than 100 points; the on-site inspection can take more time for motorhomes than for a car. You receive the digital photo report with all findings by email — as a solid basis for your purchase decision or price negotiation.
Motorhome inspection before you buy: price on request · on-site
A used motorhome can bring decades of joy — or turn expensive if water ingress in the body, a faulty gas system or a worn-out leisure battery only surface after the purchase. Our independent on-site inspection checks more than 100 points: body structure, moisture, gas, heating, solar, vehicle technology and documents. The complete digital report arrives by email. Price on request.
What is a motorhome inspection — and why is it essential when buying a motorhome?
The 9 critical weak points of used motorhomes
Water ingress in the body
Water ingress is the most common cause of write-offs in used motorhomes. Moisture penetrates the sandwich body via cracked roof seals, leaking penetrations and faulty window frames, without anything being visible from the outside at first. Our inspection includes a moisture measurement on all walls, the floor and the ceiling area — with a moisture meter, not just by visual inspection.
Roof seal and sealing points
Cracks in the roof seal, open joints around solar penetrations, antenna openings, roof vents and flue exit points are typical entry points for rainwater. Even small hairline cracks are enough to channel moisture into the body over months. Our inspection systematically examines all sealing points on the roof and documents notable spots with annotated photos.
Gas system — visual inspection and G607 distinction
A motorhome's gas system — gas bottle compartment, pressure regulator, lines, connections and gas appliances — undergoes a thorough visual inspection as part of our check. We examine the visible condition of the lines, the hose connections and the state of the gas bottle compartment for corrosion and damage. Important: a legally required G607 gas tightness test with a test certificate is not a service of our inspection — it is a standalone, legally regulated inspection that must be carried out by an approved test centre and is due at regular intervals.
Water system: fresh and waste water, pump, boiler
The fresh-water tank, waste-water tank, pressure water pump and boiler age independently of the mileage. Limescale deposits, mould in the tank or a faulty boiler thermostat show up in use — never in the listing. Our inspection assesses the visible condition of the water lines, tests the pump and boiler for function, and flags signs of limescale or unusual odours that may indicate mould.
Solar system and leisure battery
A worn-out leisure battery or an inefficient solar system is hard to spot in a stationary test. After years in the field, AGM and gel batteries lose considerable capacity without it being visible from the outside. Our inspection assesses the condition of the solar modules for cracks and delamination, checks the wiring and, based on the state of charge and battery age, provides an assessment of the on-board power supply.
Heating: Truma, Webasto and Alde
Space heaters and hot-water heating — whether Truma Combi, Webasto Air Top or an Alde wet heating system — are among the most expensive single components of a motorhome and fail in winter, when you least expect it. Our inspection includes a function test of the installed heating systems, a visual inspection for corrosion and wiring damage, and a check for obvious maintenance backlogs.
Body mounting to the chassis and corrosion
The connection between the motorhome body and the vehicle chassis is a mechanically highly stressed point. Loose bolted connections, the onset of rust at the mounting points and corrosion around the rear-axle frame are common findings on older motorhomes that are regularly parked outdoors. Our inspection catalogue expressly includes an underbody visual inspection and a check of the body-to-chassis connection.
Interior furniture: cracks, odour and moisture traces
Cabinets, kitchen furniture surfaces and flooring are the first visible indicators of past water ingress in a motorhome. Swelling chipboard, discolouration at corners, mould stains behind furniture panels and a musty smell are warning signs that should not be ignored. Our inspection also systematically examines the interior and documents any anomalies.
Tyres (DOT age) and payload uprating
Motorhomes often cover only a few thousand kilometres per year — the tyres therefore age more from time than from wear. Tyres older than six years (DOT age) are safety-critical, even if the tread still looks good. The vehicle's uprating should also be checked: many motorhomes are converted and fitted with accessories without sufficient thought given to the payload reserve. Our inspection checks both and documents them in the report.

What the motorhome inspection checks — the full scope
100+ checkpoints — vehicle and living space
The inspection catalogue covers both the vehicle technology (engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, electrics, OBD diagnostics) and all motorhome-specific systems: body structure, moisture, gas system, water system, heating, solar and interior. No area is ticked off as a blanket assumption.
Moisture measurement on walls, floor and roof
Using a moisture meter, all accessible body wall surfaces, the floor structure and the ceiling area are examined for elevated moisture readings. Notable measurements are documented in the report with annotated photos — precise coordinates, no vague 'slight moisture'.
Visual gas system inspection
The condition of the gas lines, hose connections, pressure regulator and gas bottle compartment are carefully assessed. A G607 gas tightness test is not part of the inspection (it's a standalone legal procedure) — however we recommend it as a supplementary measure and note in the report when anomalies suggest a prompt test is advisable.
Function test of heating, boiler and on-board power
The space heater, water boiler, pressure water pump and charging system are tested for function. The solar system and battery are assessed, and the state of charge as well as visible signs of age are recorded in the report.
Document verification and vehicle history
Registration certificates Part I and II, service booklet, HU (roadworthiness test) sticker, any gas system test certificates and warranty documents are checked for completeness and plausibility. Mileage, number of previous owners and service history are cross-checked.
Digital photo report by email
All findings are documented with annotated photos. You receive the complete report by email — structured, easy to understand and ready to use directly for your purchase decision or price negotiation. Motorhome inspections can take more time on-site than a car inspection; we put thoroughness before speed.

What the motorhome inspection is not — a clear distinction
The motorhome inspection from checkdenwagen.de is an independent, purchase-oriented condition assessment — not an official expert appraisal, not a roadworthiness test (HU) and not a TÜV certificate. The legally required G607 gas tightness test of the gas system is expressly not part of our scope of services. This test is a standalone, legally regulated procedure that must be carried out and documented by an approved test centre — typically due every two years. Our inspection includes a visual inspection of the gas area and provides a corresponding note in the report if there are any anomalies. Also not included: a valuation appraisal under BVSK or DAT, suitable as a basis for insurance, financing or accounting purposes, is not part of our inspection. If you need one of these, it's best to contact us directly — by phone (+49 30 301 32 327) or via the contact form. We'll discuss the scope transparently and individually. Our inspection gives no guarantee that the vehicle will remain free of defects after the purchase — it documents the condition at the time of inspection as precisely as possible and provides a sound basis for your decision.
