Alternative to TÜV: on-site at the seller · from €289

When buying a used car, you face one question: should I have a TÜV used-car inspection done — or commission an independent checkdenwagen inspector directly, who comes to the vehicle? Both options exist, but they work in fundamentally different ways: TÜV inspects the vehicle at its station, whereas checkdenwagen comes straight to the seller — no detours, no station appointment, and no need to move the vehicle. This comparison shows you factually and in full what you need to know before deciding.

checkdenwagen vs. TÜV used-car inspection: what's the main difference?

checkdenwagen.de is a provider specialising in used-car inspections, based in Berlin, that sends inspectors directly to the vehicle's location across Germany — no station appointment, no detour to a workshop, with a fixed price from €289 incl. VAT and travel. TÜV is not a single company, but a federated network of regionally organised inspection organisations — TÜV Süd, TÜV Nord, TÜV Rheinland and TÜV Hessen — which are responsible depending on the region and whose used-car inspection takes place at a TÜV station. There, the used-car inspection is a secondary service alongside the core business of main inspection (HU), emissions test (AU) and technical appraisals. The decisive difference lies in the process: at checkdenwagen the inspector comes to the vehicle — you don't have to bring the vehicle to a station or coordinate an appointment with the seller at a different location. Neither option provides a main inspection or issues an HU sticker — that is neither checkdenwagen's job nor part of a used-car inspection.

When is the TÜV used-car inspection worth it?

There are situations in which a TÜV used-car inspection is a sensible choice — and you should know these before you decide. First: you're planning a main inspection anyway. If the vehicle is due for an HU and you'd like to combine it with a used-car inspection, TÜV can deliver both from a single provider. checkdenwagen does not perform the HU and does not issue an HU sticker — this combination is only possible at an accredited inspection organisation such as TÜV. Second: you need an official TÜV appraisal or a TÜV certificate. For certain purposes — insurance matters, disputes, legally binding valuation appraisals — an official certificate from an accredited inspection organisation may be necessary. TÜV can issue one; checkdenwagen cannot. Third: the vehicle is near a TÜV station anyway and you can coordinate the transport without effort. In that case, the organisational effort of a station appointment is largely eliminated. Fourth: you're buying a vehicle from a dealer who operates or cooperates with their own TÜV station and offers you the check as part of the purchase price.

When is checkdenwagen worth it?

checkdenwagen is the better fit when the vehicle is at the seller and you don't want to — or can't — coordinate a station appointment. First: the vehicle is far away — in another city, with a private seller who has no way to bring it to a station, or in a place where there's no TÜV station nearby. checkdenwagen comes to the vehicle's location across Germany. Second: you want the vehicle inspected in its real condition — without transport, warming up and the changes that a drive to the station brings with it. A cold-start acoustic check at the vehicle's location is more reliable than one after a long drive. Third: you want to see a fixed price before booking. checkdenwagen shows you Standard (€289) and Premium (€339) — each incl. VAT and with postcode-based travel calculation — before you book. No phone call, no negotiation. Fourth: you want the Premium report with a market-value analysis and repair-cost estimate. This package is a checkdenwagen-specific service that gives you a basis for price negotiation. Fifth: you want the full money-back guarantee if the viewing falls through. If the seller cancels the appointment or doesn't make the vehicle available, checkdenwagen refunds the full amount. Sixth: you're not planning an HU and don't need an official certificate — you just want to know what's wrong with the vehicle before you buy.
