Where is the VIN on a Volvo?

The vehicle identification number of a Volvo is primarily located at the bottom left of the windscreen (readable from outside through the glass), in the engine bay on the left frame rail or the firewall, as well as on the driver's-side door pillar and on the B-pillar. Typical of newer Volvo models from around 2015 is the option of accessing the VIN directly in the on-board computer menu (Sensus Connect or the Google-based Android system from 2020) — a feature that no other mainstream European manufacturer offers as consistently. In the vehicle documents, the VIN is recorded in field E of registration certificate Part I and in full in registration certificate Part II (vehicle title). The WMI codes YV1 (Volvo passenger cars) and YV4 (Volvo SUVs) stand for production in Sweden and are the first identifying feature of a genuine Volvo VIN.

All VIN locations on Volvo in detail

Volvo vehicles follow the international standards for VIN placement — but they have one notable peculiarity that other manufacturers lack: the display in the on-board computer menu. Windscreen: At the bottom edge of the windscreen, on the left from the driver's position, the VIN is engraved on a metal plate and readable from outside through the glass. On the V series (V40, V60, V90) the plate sits on the driver's side by default. On the XC60 and XC90 (SUV models) it is likewise on the driver's side, sometimes set a little lower. Engine bay: The VIN is engraved on the left frame rail or on the firewall — easily accessible on newer Volvo engines (Drive-E units, T3, T5, T6, D3, D4, D5). On Volvo models with electric hybrid drivetrains (T6 PHEV, T8 PHEV in the XC60 and XC90), the VIN plate is partly hidden by the high-voltage distributor, but reachable with a torch. Driver's-side door pillar and B-pillar: The data plate in the driver's-side door sill shows the full VIN. On Volvo models from the SPA platform onwards (2014 XC90, from 2015 XC60 II, S90/V90) there is additionally a VIN plate on the B-pillar — a double safeguard that is particularly carefully executed on Volvos. On-board computer menu: New to Volvo and a genuine unique selling point: from around model year 2015 with Sensus Connect (and throughout on all models with the Google AAOS operating system from 2020, i.e. XC40 II, C40 Recharge, EX40, EC40, EX90), the VIN can be accessed directly in the vehicle menu under Settings > Vehicle > Vehicle Identification. This is no substitute for the physical locations — a deviating VIN in the menu is just as serious a warning sign as a deviating one on a plate. Vehicle documents: Field E of registration certificate Part I and registration certificate Part II contain the full VIN. Always cross-check against the physical locations and the on-board computer (on newer models).

Volvo WMI codes: YV1 and YV4 — what the first three VIN digits mean

Volvo-specific notes for the VIN check

Volvo has a few peculiarities when it comes to the VIN check that are not as pronounced with either German or French manufacturers. First, the on-board computer: no other European volume manufacturer offers the VIN as accessibly in the vehicle menu as Volvo. This is handy for a quick preliminary check — but buyers should not rely on the menu display alone. Manipulated software could show a false VIN. The physical plates on the vehicle remain the more reliable point of comparison. Second, the two WMI codes: Volvo uses YV1 for classic passenger-car models and YV4 for SUV models and newer ranges. The split is not sharp and has shifted over the course of model updates. Anyone buying an XC60 II (from 2017) or an XC90 II (from 2014) should expect YV4. On the S60 III (from 2018), V60 II (from 2018) and V90 (from 2016), YV1 is more likely — but not guaranteed. If in doubt, check the WMI in the decoder and cross-reference it with the vehicle documents. Third, the Geely takeover: since the takeover by Geely in 2010, Volvo vehicles have continued to be produced in Sweden and Belgium, but there are also Volvo models for the Chinese market that were produced in China and carry different WMI codes. In Germany, a Volvo on offer should always carry YV1 or YV4 as its WMI — otherwise the origin must be fully explained. Fourth, the model year: as with all European manufacturers, position 10 of the Volvo VIN is not reliably coded to the ISO standard. The VIN decoder gives an indication with an explicit caveat. The decisive figure is the date of first registration in the registration certificate.
