You'll find the VIN of a Nissan in up to five spots. The most reliable is the bottom-left corner of the windscreen on the dashboard: readable from outside through the windscreen, without opening the vehicle. In the engine bay the VIN is stamped on a chassis rail near the radiator or on a plate on the bulkhead. On the driver's-side door pillar the vehicle carries a sticker with the full VIN and further vehicle data. The B-pillar carries a stamped number on many Nissan model lines. In the documents, the VIN appears in field E of the registration certificate Part I (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I) and in full in the registration certificate Part II (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II). For the European market the WMI code is especially informative: it distinguishes between Japanese production (JN1) and the British plant in Sunderland (SJN), where popular models such as the Qashqai and Juke are built.
Where do I find the VIN on a Nissan?
The vehicle identification number of your Nissan is located in several physical spots in and on the vehicle. We show you every position, explain the meaning of the WMI codes JN1 and SJN, and give you concrete tips for inspecting a used car.
Every VIN position on the Nissan in detail
Nissan places the VIN at several redundant spots in line with the international standard. The windscreen is the first place to look: the stamped plate is visible at the bottom left without opening doors or the bonnet. In the engine bay the exact position varies by model and year: on the Qashqai and Juke the VIN is often on the left chassis rail, while on the X-Trail and older models it is sometimes on the bulkhead panel or a plate near the engine block. Besides the VIN, the door-pillar sticker usually also carries the recommended tyre pressure and vehicle weights. A sticker that bubbles, shows adhesive residue or has obviously been freshly applied is a warning sign. The B-pillar is especially important on vehicles that have suffered a side impact: if the B-pillar has been replaced, the stamped VIN will be missing or a new one will have been applied — in a damage case that is direct evidence of a major accident repair. On the Nissan Leaf (and other Nissan electric vehicles) the VIN is positioned identically to combustion models; the battery serial number is separate and is not contained in the VIN.
VIN positions on the Nissan at a glance
| Position | Visibility | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom corner of the windscreen (from outside) | Very good — readable from outside without opening | Stamped plate; the first spot to check during the sales talk |
| Engine bay (chassis rail or bulkhead panel) | Good — accessible after opening the bonnet | Position varies by model; clean off dirt before reading |
| Driver's-side door pillar | Good — sticker visible when the driver's door is opened | Besides the VIN it also carries tyre-pressure data; check that the sticker is original |
| B-pillar | Medium — depending on the model, under the door seal or trim | Especially important if a side impact is suspected: a missing or new stamp is a warning sign |
| Registration certificate Part I (field E) | Very good — immediately readable | Compare with all physical spots |
| Registration certificate Part II (vehicle title) | Very good — full VIN | Insist on the original; no reputable purchase without the vehicle title |
What does your Nissan's WMI code reveal?
| WMI code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| JN1 | Nissan, made in Japan — the original code for Japanese-built Nissan vehicles, e.g. GT-R, 370Z, older Navara variants and export models manufactured in Japan. |
| SJN | Nissan, made in Great Britain — Sunderland plant (Washington, Tyne and Wear). This code is carried by models destined for Europe such as the Qashqai (J11, J12), Juke (F15, F16) and certain Note variants produced at Britain's largest car plant. |
What's special about the VIN on a Nissan
With the Sunderland plant, Nissan operates Great Britain's largest car factory and builds there central Europe models such as the Qashqai and Juke. Anyone buying a used Qashqai in Germany or another EU country therefore usually sees an SJN WMI code rather than a Japanese JN1. That is normal, correct and carries no negative meaning. If you find a Qashqai whose VIN begins with JN1, you should check carefully: that would mean a vehicle manufactured in Japan that was not intended for the standard European market — possibly an import from a non-EU country. In such cases the warranty, recall coverage and spare-parts supply may deviate from the norm. The model year from position 10 of the VIN is, on Nissan as with most Japanese manufacturers, generally coded per the ISO 3779 scheme, but it can differ by one year on European registrations. On the Nissan Leaf and other electric models the VIN contains no battery data; the battery status must be determined via OBD diagnostics.
