Where do I find the VIN on a Fiat?

Fiat VINs are located at the bottom of the windscreen, in the engine bay on the chassis rail, on the driver's-side door pillar and — on the Fiat 500 and Panda — on the boot floor beneath the spare-wheel well. All the locations, the WMI ZFA from Italy and what you need to know when buying.

Where is the VIN on a Fiat?

The vehicle identification number of a Fiat is primarily found at the bottom left of the windscreen (readable from outside) and in the engine bay on the chassis rail or the splash guard — the exact spot varies by model, but is always accessible with the bonnet open. On the driver's-side door sill, a type plate with the VIN and further vehicle data is fitted to the door pillar, and on newer models also on the B-pillar. Typically for Fiat, on compact models such as the Fiat 500 and the Panda there is a stamped location on the boot floor, sometimes beneath the spare-wheel well or the floor trim. The WMI code ZFA identifies Fiat and means the vehicle was produced in Italy — the first character Z stands for the European region, more precisely for vehicles from the WMI block assigned to Italy.

All VIN locations on Fiat in detail

Anyone buying a used Fiat should check the VIN in at least three places and compare it character by character — a discrepancy at even a single location is a warning sign that calls for immediate clarification. Windscreen: At the bottom edge, lower left from the driver's position, sits the VIN plate on most Fiat models, readable from outside through the glass. On the Fiat 500 (Cinquecento, from 2007) the plate is very compact but clearly visible. On the Fiat Panda (III from 2012) and the Tipo (from 2015) it sits in the same standard position. On the large Ducato (van) the plate is sometimes shifted a little to the right onto the passenger side. Engine bay: The VIN is engraved on a plate on the left or right chassis rail — on the 500 and Panda often on the strut tower bracket or the splash guard. The Fiat Tipo carries the VIN on the right chassis rail. On vehicles with the 1.3 MultiJet or 1.6 MultiJet diesel, the plate can be partly obscured by engine lines. Door pillar and B-pillar: The type plate on the driver's-side door sill shows the full VIN and further vehicle data. It is visible at hip height when you open the driver's door. On newer Fiat models (Tipo II, 500X, 500L) there is a further VIN plate on the B-pillar. Boot floor: On the Fiat 500 (open the tailgate, lift the floor trim) and on the Panda there is a stamped VIN location beneath the spare-wheel well or the rear floor trim — a spot that is especially important on vehicles where tampering is suspected, because it is not readily accessible from outside. Vehicle documents: Field E of registration certificate part I and registration certificate part II (vehicle title) contain the full VIN. When buying, always ask for the original title and compare it with the physical locations on the vehicle.

Fiat-specific notes for the VIN check

Fiat belongs to the Stellantis group and is one of the most tradition-rich European carmakers. When checking the VIN there are a few particularities buyers should know. The first character of the Fiat VIN is Z — not W as with German manufacturers or V as with French ones. In the ISO 3166 country key, Z stands for the WMI block to which, among others, Italy (ZA to ZZ) is assigned. ZFA as the complete WMI identifies Fiat S.p.A. unambiguously. Buyers who see a supposed Fiat vehicle with a different starting letter must question this immediately. Fiat vehicles produced outside Italy — for example in Poland (the Fiat 500L from Kragujevac in Serbia, the Fiat 500X from Melfi in Italy or the Jeep Renegade), in Brazil or in Turkey — carry different WMI codes. These vehicles are not European import vehicles in the conventional sense; the WMI shows the country of production, not the sales market. The model-year field (position 10) is likewise not reliably coded to the ISO standard on Fiat vehicles for the European market. The VIN decoder shows a note with a caveat — the authoritative reference is the date of first registration in the registration certificate. In practical terms: anyone wanting to buy a Fiat 500 — the best-selling Fiat model in Germany — should note that the new fully electric 500e (from 2020) carries the same WMI ZFA as the classic model, but differs in all other VIN positions. Confusing the 500e with the combustion 500 (or vice versa) can become expensive when taking out insurance and buying spare parts.
