Have a used Honda checked: on-site used-car inspection, from €289

Honda rightly builds some of the most reliable vehicles on the market — yet even the Japanese have their weak spots. A 1.5 VTEC Turbo with fuel in the oil from frequent short trips, a CVT close to its wear limit or an older CR-V with underbody rust are typical risks that stay invisible in the listing. Our inspector comes straight to the vehicle, checks more than 100 points with Honda-specific priorities and delivers a digital photo report within 24 hours. Fixed price from €289 incl. VAT and travel.

What matters in the Honda used-car inspection?

checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of on-site used-car inspections operating Germany-wide, based in Berlin with a network of inspectors across the country. Honda is commonly seen as the epitome of the Japanese reliability philosophy: the legendary naturally aspirated engines with their love of revs, solid build quality and a robust basic concept have earned Honda an excellent reputation over decades. But anyone who thinks they can buy a used Honda without looking closely overlooks the model-specific weak points that have accumulated in the most recent vehicle generations. Foremost among them is the 1.0- and 1.5-litre VTEC turbo petrol engine: under heavy short-trip use, fuel can get into the engine oil — a phenomenon Honda itself has addressed with recall campaigns and software updates, but which remains relevant in everyday used-car practice. On top of that comes the continuously variable CVT transmission, fitted to many model lines (Jazz, HR-V, CR-V), which develops noises and wear with careless maintenance or high mileage. Our inspector examines your desired Honda on-site for around 1.5 hours using an inspection catalogue of more than 100 points — with particular focus on engine generation, transmission history, vehicle history and Honda-typical weak spots. You receive your report within 24 hours as a clear basis for your purchase decision or price negotiation.

Honda: reliability, character and what buyers should know

Japanese reliability — with caveats

Honda regularly ranks in the upper third of international reliability surveys (J.D. Power, TÜV Report). The older naturally aspirated engines in particular — from the 1.4- and 1.6-litre VTEC in the Jazz and Civic to the 2.2 i-CTDI diesel — are considered exceptionally long-lived when serviced regularly. The newer turbo petrol engines, however, call for heightened attention.

Newer turbo models: short trips are a risk

With the introduction of the 1.0- and 1.5-litre VTEC turbo engines in the Civic (tenth generation), CR-V and HR-V, Honda joined the efficiency trend — but brought along a known direct-injection issue in the process. In short-trip use, fuel condenses in the cylinder and gets into the engine oil. The diluted oil loses its lubricating ability and accelerates engine wear. Honda has responded: recalls, software updates and revised recommended oil-change intervals. Whether a specific vehicle is affected can only be clarified by a targeted check.

Running costs: moderate — but not without risks

Honda is noticeably below the German premium brands when it comes to workshop costs and spare-part prices. That relative cost advantage, however, only holds if the vehicle has been well maintained. A CVT transmission that needs replacing, or an i-DTEC diesel with a clogged DPF, can quickly eat up the savings. The most important precaution: a complete service booklet, a traceable oil-change history and a plausible mileage.

The typical Honda buyer — and why a check is still worthwhile

Used Hondas appeal to a price-conscious, pragmatic audience that puts reliability ahead of prestige. This buyer group often underestimates the model-specific risks of newer generations. The tenth- and eleventh-generation Civic and CR-V in particular still come across as relatively young on the used market — yet already carry the early symptoms of VTEC turbo oil dilution if the previous owner drove a lot in city traffic.

Honda weak spots: what our check specifically examines

1.0/1.5 VTEC Turbo: fuel in the oil (oil dilution)

The 1.0-litre VTEC Turbo (Jazz, Civic from 2017) and the 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo (Civic X, CR-V, HR-V from 2017) can let fuel into the engine oil under frequent short-trip use. Technically, it happens like this: during cold running, the direct injection wets the cylinder walls with fuel that doesn't fully evaporate on short trips and passes the piston rings into the oil. The oil then smells of petrol, becomes thinner and loses its lubricating effect — bearing wear follows. For affected vehicles, Honda has recommended software updates and shortened oil-change intervals and carried out recall campaigns. Our inspector smells the dipstick for fuel odour, assesses the oil consistency and level, checks the service history for oil-change intervals and reads the fault memory for engine-specific entries.

CVT transmission: noises, vibration and wear

Honda fits a continuously variable CVT automatic transmission in the Jazz, HR-V, CR-V (up to 2018) and some Civic variants. CVT units are more maintenance-intensive than their reputation suggests: the steel push belt and the pulleys wear with high mileage, infrequent transmission-fluid changes or a sporty driving style. Typical symptoms: a grinding hum or droning when pulling away, vibrations under load, sporadic slipping at full throttle or when overtaking. In practice, Honda recommends transmission-fluid changes more often than officially stated. Our inspector checks the transmission fluid for colour and smell, tests every operating state (pulling away, motorway acceleration, overrun) on the test drive and evaluates CVT-specific OBD codes.

i-DTEC diesel: DPF clogging and EGR coking

Honda's 1.6- and 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engines are considered fundamentally solid designs — but, like all diesels with a particulate filter and exhaust-gas recirculation, are vulnerable in short-trip use. A DPF that never reaches the necessary regeneration temperature slowly clogs up; regeneration in city traffic is often incomplete. The EGR recirculation gums up over time, reducing engine power and fuel efficiency. Our inspector reads the DPF fill level from the OBD system, evaluates EGR-related fault codes and assesses the acceleration behaviour and smoke emission under load on the test drive.

A/C compressor: early failure and bearing damage

The air-conditioning compressor is a known weak point on several Honda model lines — especially on the Jazz and older Civic models. A common cause: insufficient lubrication of the compressor due to too-infrequent A/C use or careless maintenance. Symptoms range from an audible rattle when the air conditioning is switched on through to complete failure. An air-conditioning compressor replacement causes considerable costs depending on the model. Our inspector switches the air conditioning on, listens to the compressor for unwanted noises, checks the cooling performance with a thermometer and assesses the refrigerant level.

Rust: CR-V underbody and brake lines, older Civic

Older Honda CR-V models (second and third generation, model years approx. 2002–2012) are known for underbody corrosion that, in the worst case, attacks the brake lines. This is safety-critical and easily overlooked in simple visual inspections. Older Civic too (up to approx. 2012) can show rust on the wheel arches, sills and rear suspension. Newer models are far better protected, but not immune. Our inspector systematically examines the underbody, checks the brake lines for corrosion damage and documents every rust spot with photos.

Brakes: caliper, pads and braking performance

Hondas used predominantly in city traffic often show brake calipers that stick on one side or have seized from rust — a classic short-trip problem that reduces braking effect and wears the pads unevenly. On the rear drum brakes of older Jazz models in particular, rust and abrasion build up and impair operation. Our inspector checks all four brakes for pad thickness, disc condition and caliper freedom of movement and tests the braking effect on the test drive.

Starter, battery and electrical system

Older Hondas — especially seventh- and eighth-generation Jazz and Civic (model years approx. 2002–2011) — occasionally show problems with the starter and battery at higher mileage. Starting trouble in winter, a hesitant ignition sequence or a starter that sporadically fails to engage are early symptoms. On top of this come minor electrical issues: faulty window regulators, problems with the multifunction display or the central locking. Our inspector measures the battery voltage under load, checks the starting behaviour, reads all accessible control units for stored fault codes and systematically tests every electrical function.

Naturally aspirated VTEC engines: oil consumption at high mileage

The high-revving naturally aspirated VTEC engines — the 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 VTEC in the Civic and CR-V as well as the 2.0 VTEC in the Accord and older CR-V — are largely responsible for Honda's reputation for longevity. At very high mileage (from approx. 150,000–200,000 km), the piston rings and valve-stem seals can deteriorate with age and cause moderate oil consumption. Anyone buying a Honda with a six-figure mileage and planning a long period of use should have this point checked. Our inspector assesses the oil level and quality, checks for blue exhaust smoke at start-up and under load, and evaluates the service history for indications of oil consumption.

Service history: scrutinise oil-change intervals

On the 1.5 VTEC Turbo in particular, the service history is not a formality but a safety feature: oil dilution from short-trip use makes short oil-change intervals necessary. A vehicle serviced according to the manufacturer's specification (an interval of up to 30,000 km under normal conditions) but driven mostly in town has had its oil changed too rarely. The transmission-fluid change history is equally decisive on the CVT. Our inspector evaluates the service booklet in full, matches the intervals against the usage profile and assesses the plausibility of the maintenance history.

Frequently inspected Honda models at checkdenwagen.de

Most often, our customers commission the Honda used-car inspection for the Civic — Honda's volume model, present on the used market in various generations. The tenth generation (2016–2021) with the 1.5 VTEC Turbo is especially relevant here, because it falls exactly in the age bracket in which the oil-dilution issue becomes visible on short-trip-dominated vehicles. The Jazz is another classic among inspection requests: compact, town-oriented and therefore predisposed to CVT wear and short-trip oil problems. The CR-V is mainly a concern in its third generation (2006–2012) — because of underbody rust and brake-line corrosion, but also because of the i-DTEC diesel in later variants. The HR-V (from 2015) is increasingly being requested as the first generation reaches the critical age with high mileages. The Accord and Legend play a smaller role on the German used market, but do come to us with a focus on the V6 automatic transmission and electronics inspection. Whatever the Honda model: our inspector knows the generation-specific weak spots and adjusts the inspection focus accordingly.
