Where do I find the VIN on a Renault?

Renault VINs are located as standard at the bottom-left corner of the windscreen, in the engine bay on the chassis rail and in the driver-side door sill. On top of that come two further locations that Renault uses particularly often. All the places it can be found, the WMI code VF1 and a clear guide for buying a used car — at a glance.

Where is the VIN on a Renault?

The vehicle identification number of a Renault is found primarily at the bottom left of the windscreen, readable from outside through the glass, as well as on the data plate or chassis rail in the engine bay. In addition it is stamped on the driver-side door sill (door pillar), on the B-pillar and — on many compact-class Renault models — also under the passenger seat or on the boot floor. In the vehicle documents, field E of the registration certificate part I and the registration certificate part II (vehicle title) carry the full 17-character VIN. The WMI code VF1 stands for Renault S.A.S. with its production plant in France and is the first identifying feature of a genuine Renault VIN.

All the places to find the VIN on a Renault at a glance

Renault fits the vehicle identification number in several places on the vehicle to make tampering and theft harder. The best-known and most easily accessible location is the windscreen: along the lower edge, in the bottom-left corner from the driver's position, the VIN is engraved on a data plate or stamped on a metal plaque and visible from outside through the glass. For buyers who want to check the vehicle straight from the listing, this is the quickest method. In the engine bay, the VIN on a Renault is usually found on the right or left chassis rail — depending on the model and model year. On the Clio and Megane the plaque is often located on the bulkhead at the front right, sometimes also on the strut-tower mount. The VIN in the engine bay is often the most heavily soiled, but is easily readable once properly cleaned. The driver-side door pillar carries, on most Renault models, a data plate with the VIN and further vehicle details. The plate is visible on the door frame when you open the driver's door. On the Captur and Kadjar it can additionally be found on the B-pillar. Specific to Renault is a further stamped location under the passenger seat or on the boot floor, used above all on older Clio and Twingo models. This spot is harder to access for quick checks, but is an important comparison point if tampering is suspected. In the vehicle documents, the VIN is mandatorily recorded in field E of the registration certificate part I. The registration certificate part II (formerly the vehicle title) also carries it in full. When buying a used car you should always cross-check the VIN on the windscreen, in the engine bay and in the document against each other — discrepancies are a clear warning sign.

Renault particularities for the VIN check

Renault vehicles carry the VIN reliably at the standard positions, but they have two particularities that matter when buying a used car. First: the WMI code VF1 stands without exception for vehicles produced under the Renault brand in France. Anyone buying a vehicle that is supposedly a French-built Renault but begins with a different WMI must question this immediately. Renault models built in other countries for other markets (for example Dacia-based Renaults for emerging markets) carry differing WMI codes and do not belong to the European vehicle stock. Second: on the Clio III, Megane III and Twingo II generations, the VIN was occasionally stamped under the passenger seat or on the boot floor — a location unusual among German manufacturers. This position served as an additional anti-tampering measure and should be specifically checked when buying a vehicle suspected of tampering. Third: the model-year field of the VIN (position 10) is not reliably encoded to ISO standard on Renault vehicles for the European market. The VIN decoder shows an indication that may differ from the actual first registration. What counts is always the date in the registration certificate part I. Fourth: anyone wanting to check the VIN of a Renault straight from the listing should use the free VIN decoder from checkdenwagen.de to at least cross-check the WMI. For a genuine assessment of accident history, mileage and technical condition, an on-site inspection by checkdenwagen.de is the only reliable method.
