Where is the VIN on a Kia?

A Kia's VIN is physically present at up to five locations on the vehicle. The most reliable and easiest to access is the bottom left corner of the windshield at the dashboard: readable from outside through the front glass, without having to open any doors. A second stamping is in the engine bay, typically on the right-hand or left-hand chassis rail. Inside the cabin, the VIN is applied to the driver's-side door pillar on a sticker or a stamped plate. The fourth physical location is the B-pillar. In the vehicle documents, the VIN appears in field E of Part I of the registration document, as well as in full in Part II of the registration document. When buying a used car, all locations should be compared: if the stamping, sticker, and documents all match, that is a strong indication of an untampered vehicle.

Every VIN location on the Kia in detail

When applying the VIN, Kia follows the international standard and places the number at several redundant locations. The bottom right corner of the windshield from the driver's perspective is the first place to look on almost all Kia models: the stamped metal plate is visible from outside through the glass and can be read without any tools. In the engine bay, the VIN is stamped either directly onto a chassis rail or onto a plate near the radiator. The driver's door pillar carries a white sticker with the VIN, which can fade or be replaced on heavily used vehicles — a damaged or freshly applied sticker is a warning sign. On many Kia model lines, the B-pillar also contains a stamped version. On Kia models from the 2010 model year onward, the VIN is additionally stored in the on-board diagnostics system (OBD) and can be read out with a diagnostic device. Comparing all physical locations against the documents is the most important step in a used-car inspection.

What does your Kia's WMI code reveal?

WMI codeMeaning
KNAKia, manufactured in South Korea — the most common code for Kia vehicles produced in Korea (e.g. Sportage, Ceed, Stinger, Sorento of most model years).
KNDKia SUV, manufactured in South Korea — specific WMI code for SUV model lines from Korean production, e.g. certain Sportage and Sorento variants.

Special features of the VIN on a Kia

Every Kia passenger car carries a WMI that begins with K — the first character encodes the South Korea region. Anyone buying a Kia whose VIN begins with a W, V, or another letter should check this immediately: it would mean the vehicle was manufactured in a different country than the model designation suggests. For standard European Kia models such as the Ceed, XCeed, Sportage, and Niro, Korea is the regular production site. As with most Asian manufacturers, the model year from position 10 of the VIN should generally be read with caution: while the position is filled according to the ISO standard, the calendar model year can differ from the European registration year, particularly with year-end imports. The reliable figure is always the date of first registration in the vehicle registration document. For used Kia electric vehicles (EV6, EV9, Niro Electric), an additional point applies: the battery serial number is documented separately and is not contained in the VIN. An on-site check by checkdenwagen determines the actual battery condition and charge cycles.
