Read the Euro standard from the vehicle registration: what field 14.1 really says

Where does the emission class appear in the vehicle registration?

The emission class appears in the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil 1 (registration certificate part 1, the vehicle registration), coded in field 14.1, the key number for the emission class. It's usually four characters; what matters are the last two digits, which form the emission code and encode the Euro standard. You have to match this digit combination against the official key-number list to read off Euro 1 to Euro 6 with their sub-levels. In addition, field 14 gives the corresponding national emission class. If you don't have a list to hand, you can also look up the Euro standard via the manufacturer key number (HSN) and the type key number (TSN) from fields 2.1 and 2.2. This is practically relevant because the Euro standard determines the environmental sticker, driving in low-emission zones, possible diesel driving bans, as well as vehicle tax and resale value.

Where the emission class appears in the vehicle registration

The emission class reveals how cleanly a vehicle burns fuel according to its official classification — and it does not appear in plain text in the vehicle registration, but in coded form. You'll find it in the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil 1 (registration certificate part 1), that is, the document you carry while driving. Two fields are responsible for the emission classification. In field 14 the registration office records the emission class in the form of a code that follows the national emission-class system. The truly decisive field is 14.1: this is where the key number for the emission class appears. This key number is the key to the Euro standard — and it's precisely its final digits that you need to be able to read.

The key number in 14.1 usually consists of several characters. The last two digits form what is known as the emission code and encode which emission level the vehicle is assigned to. Two vehicles can look identical from the outside and still carry different emission codes, because they were built in different model years with different emission control technology. That's why it isn't enough to infer the Euro standard from model and year of build — the digits in the vehicle registration are the binding source.

What matters is distinguishing this from other fields of the registration certificate. The emission class has nothing to do with the power output in field P.2/P.4 or the engine capacity in field P.1 — those fields are explained in the field-by-field legend in this documents series. And it isn't the same as the CO2 figure, which is shown in a field of its own and is primarily relevant for vehicle tax on first registrations from a certain cut-off date. When we talk about the emission class or Euro standard, we mean fields 14 and 14.1 — not consumption or CO2 values.

Roughly what Euro 1 to Euro 6 mean

The Euro standards are a Europe-wide, uniform ladder of ever stricter emission limits. The higher the number, the lower the permitted emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, particulates, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons. A higher Euro standard therefore doesn't mean more power or lower consumption, but cleaner exhaust output according to official measurement — and thus less trouble in low-emission zones.

Broadly, the development can be placed as follows: Euro 1 and Euro 2 represent the first Europe-wide emission levels and are only found on very old vehicles now. Euro 3 and Euro 4 mark a significant tightening and are found on many older but still widespread used cars. Euro 5 brought mandatory particulate-filter technology into widespread use for diesels. Euro 6 is the current standard and is again broken down into sub-levels — from the early variants through to Euro 6d, which sets the strictest requirements for nitrogen oxide values even under real driving conditions.

These sub-levels are no academic nicety when buying. Two diesels can both be called "Euro 6," but one is an early Euro 6 variant and the other a Euro 6d — and it's precisely this difference that can determine whether the car is affected by a local diesel driving ban or expressly exempt. That's why it isn't enough for the seller to say "Euro 6"; the sub-level is coded in the emission code and should be read off specifically.

A second point concerns the combination of drivetrain and standard. With petrol cars, the Euro standard is usually unproblematic for everyday use in German low-emission zones today, because they almost always receive the green sticker. With a diesel, on the other hand, the standard is the central risk factor: it determines the environmental sticker, possible driving bans and a substantial part of the depreciation. Why the emission class decides real money when you buy

The emission class isn't a number for the statistics; it's the lever behind three very concrete everyday questions: Is the car allowed to drive where you need it? What will it cost you per year in tax? And what will it still be worth when you later sell it? Anyone who checks the emission class before buying answers all three questions before signing — instead of finding out afterwards that the car isn't allowed into the city centre.

Environmental sticker and low-emission zones. Many German cities have low-emission zones that may only be entered with the green sticker. Which sticker a vehicle receives is directly tied to the emission class in the vehicle registration. A vehicle that doesn't reach the green sticker is effectively unusable across large parts of inner-city traffic — a deal-breaker if you live in a city with a low-emission zone or regularly drive there. So always check the emission class in the context of the places where you actually intend to use the car.

Diesel driving bans. Beyond the general low-emission zone, individual cities have introduced route-based or zone-wide diesel driving bans that hinge on the Euro standard: older diesel standards are affected, higher levels up to Euro 6d are usually exempt. The rules differ locally and change over time — which is why no blanket figure and no fixed threshold can be given for the whole of Germany here. What you can do is concrete: read the exact Euro standard from the vehicle registration and, for the exact cities where you drive, look up the rules that apply there. A diesel that still drives in your city today may already be shut out of another.

Vehicle tax and resale value. The emission classification feeds into the calculation of vehicle tax — depending on first registration, via the emission class and the CO2 value. So a vehicle with an unfavourable classification can cost you more on an ongoing basis. The standard has an even clearer effect on the resale value: a diesel with a low Euro standard that is threatened by driving bans loses value disproportionately, because the pool of potential buyers shrinks. You pay this loss of value when you resell — which is why it belongs in every purchase calculation. Specific tax or value figures can't be generalised responsibly; what matters is that you know the direction: a higher standard means more future-proof and more value-stable.

How to read the Euro standard from the key number or via HSN/TSN

There are two practical ways to get from the details in the vehicle registration to the exact Euro standard. Both require matching against an official list — the digits alone mean nothing to a layperson, but the match is no great feat once you know where to look.

Route 1: Via the emission code in field 14.1. Take the key number from field 14.1 and look at the last two digits — that's the emission code. You match this combination against the official key-number register, which assigns a Euro standard with sub-level to every emission code. That's how you resolve, for example, whether a "Euro 6" is in detail an early variant or a Euro 6d. Make sure you actually read field 14.1 and don't confuse field 14 with the national class — the two belong together but encode the information differently.

Route 2: Via HSN and TSN. If you don't have access to the emission-code list, you can get there via the manufacturer key number (HSN) in field 2.1 and the type key number (TSN) in field 2.2. These two numbers identify the exact vehicle variant. The HSN/TSN allow the vehicle version to be pinned down unambiguously and thus the recorded emission class to be looked up. The advantage: HSN and TSN are the numbers you need anyway for insurance and many reference tools — the Euro standard then falls out as a by-product.

Whichever route you choose, there are two typical pitfalls. First: don't rely on the seller's verbal statement. "It's a Euro 6" is no reliable proof without a look at field 14.1, especially with the Euro 6 sub-levels. Second: watch the plausibility. If something on the vehicle was subsequently modified in the emission control system, or the stated standard doesn't fit the year of build, that's a reason to look more closely. The emission class in the interplay of the vehicle documents

The emission class is one piece of the puzzle in the vehicle documents — and it only shows its value when it fits with the rest. A cleanly read emission code is of little use if vehicle and documents don't belong together, or if the standard is correct but the vehicle no longer technically delivers what the classification promises. That's why it pays to view the emission detail in the overall picture rather than in isolation.

The overall picture starts with cross-checking the documents against each other: the details in part 1 should match the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil 2 (registration certificate part 2), which documents the owner and vehicle history. Does the chassis number match, are the manufacturer and type key numbers correct, and is the emission class recorded consistently? Such cross-checks are routine, but they uncover exactly the cases where documents and vehicle don't belong together. For the emission class this means: the key number in 14.1 must match the engine actually fitted and the vehicle's emission control technology.

The second part of the overall picture is the technical reality behind the standard. A Euro standard is a classification based on an official measurement in as-new condition — it doesn't tell you whether the emission control system on the used vehicle still works properly today. With diesels in particular, a vehicle can formally carry a good standard and still have a coked-up EGR valve or a clogged particulate filter that blows the values in real operation. The standard in the vehicle registration and the actual technical condition are two different things — you should know both before buying.
