checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of used-car inspections based in Berlin. Behind the service stands no corporation and no dealer alliance, but a sole proprietorship that has built a nationwide network of qualified, freelance inspectors. These inspectors come directly to the vehicle's location — to the dealer's lot, to a private address, to the car park. They act exclusively on behalf of the buyer and have no financial interest in the purchase going through. The network relies on specialists with a proven hands-on background: master mechanics, TÜV-trained appraisers, DEKRA-trained inspectors and automotive technicians with many years of workshop experience. All work to a uniform inspection protocol covering more than 100 points and deliver their findings as a digital report — written in plain language, documented with photos, within 24 hours of the inspection.
Inspector Network: Automotive Appraisers Across Germany
Who inspects your used vehicle? Not an anonymous service provider, not a call-centre script: checkdenwagen.de works with a carefully built network of freelance automotive appraisers and master mechanics — with genuine expertise, their own measuring equipment, and clear independence from sellers, dealers and manufacturers.
Which profiles are represented in the network?
The inspector network is made up of different professional profiles that complement one another. The largest share consists of master mechanics with many years of workshop experience: they know the typical wear patterns, know where previous owners or dealers like to touch things up, and can infer the condition of bearings, belts or the cooling system from the sound of a running engine. Alongside them are TÜV-trained appraisers in the network, who sharpen the eye for safety-relevant design features — suspension, braking system, steering geometry. DEKRA-trained inspectors bring particular expertise in damage assessment and document verification. The spectrum is rounded out by automotive technicians with specialist knowledge of vehicle electronics and OBD diagnostics, who are indispensable for modern vehicles with complex driver-assistance systems. All inspectors bring their own measuring equipment — paint thickness gauge, OBD diagnostic device, endoscope.
How is the network set up regionally?
checkdenwagen.de operates throughout Germany. The network provides comprehensive coverage of major cities and their surrounding areas — from Hamburg, Berlin and Cologne, through Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, to medium-sized cities and the regions in between. In areas with lower population density, inspector availability is checked individually; the resulting travel cost is shown to the customer transparently on the booking page before they pay. For vehicles in particularly remote locations or just across the border, we are happy to make arrangements individually. The inspector network is growing continuously. Anyone who is themselves a qualified automotive appraiser or master mechanic and would like to take on regional assignments will find all the relevant information on applying on the 'Become an inspector' page.
How does checkdenwagen.de ensure independence?
Independence is the core offering: the inspector has no interest in the purchase going through. They earn neither a commission from the seller nor a referral fee. Their sole task is the neutral condition assessment — with measuring equipment, protocol and camera, not gut feeling and seller promises. Structurally, this independence is secured through several measures: all inspectors work freelance and are therefore not tied into the economic interests of a dealership or dealer alliance. The inspection protocol is standardised — it leaves no room for selective reporting. Random quality checks by checkdenwagen.de complement the customer feedback system, which is actively gathered after every inspection.
What sets our network apart from TÜV and DEKRA inspection centres?
TÜV, DEKRA and other officially recognised inspection organisations carry out the statutory main inspections (HU) and emissions tests (AU). The vehicle has to be brought to an inspection centre for this — the focus is on statutory minimum safety requirements, not on the purchase decision. These inspection centres issue HU stickers but do not produce a purchase-oriented condition report from the buyer's perspective. The checkdenwagen.de network works as a complement to this: the inspectors come to the vehicle, inspect from the buyer's perspective, provide a market-value estimate (in the Premium check) and apply their technical expertise specifically to the purchase decision. Many network inspectors have years of TÜV or DEKRA experience themselves — so they know exactly how official inspection centres work and round out that knowledge with the practical buying dimension.
What happens when a check is booked in a region with low coverage?
The network is designed to make appointments possible at short notice, as far as possible nationwide. In regions with lower inspector density, checkdenwagen.de checks availability once the booking comes in and gets back to the customer before the order is firmly assigned. The travel cost reflects the actual effort involved and is stated transparently before payment. If no inspector can be coordinated within a reasonable timeframe and travel distance, the booking amount is refunded in full.
What the report looks like — what our inspectors document
Every report follows the standardised checkdenwagen format: bodywork and paint, engine and drivetrain, transmission, suspension and brakes, electronics, interior and documents. Findings are described in plain language and backed up with photos — without unnecessary workshop jargon, so that even non-experts can make sense of every point. On the suspension: components such as ball joints or tie-rod ends can only be fully inspected on a vehicle lift. Our experts identify many issues even without a lift — through visual inspection of the inner tyre edges, a play test with the vehicle stationary, and above all during the test drive (tracking behaviour, noises, braking pull). If the seller has a lift available, it is of course used; we note that in the report. Underbody photos are taken wherever possible — with a smartphone or endoscope from the wheel arch. In doing so, we document in particular the corrosion picture, the exhaust system and any visible leaks. For vehicles whose underbody cannot be viewed without a lift, we state this openly — no findings based on guesswork. Brakes are assessed without specific millimetre values — residual-thickness measurements directly at the wheel are unreliable without disassembly. Instead, we assign conditions analogous to the HU assessment: 'wear reached' (under 20 % remaining tread or close to minimum thickness) and 'wear approaching' (under 30 %). This gives you a reliable statement without a 0.5 mm measurement difference tipping the verdict. The paint thickness measurement is already included in the Standard package — at all relevant body panels, with documented values for each spot. The Premium package additionally adds a digital VIN check (owner, theft and odometer indicators from international vehicle databases) for even more transparency before the purchase.
