checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of on-site used-car inspections operating across Germany, based in Berlin with a network of inspectors throughout the country. With the BMW used-car inspection, brand-specific knowledge of weak spots is at the heart of everything: BMW engines of the E and F series have well-known trouble zones that remain invisible in a listing without targeted know-how — among them the rear-mounted timing chain in the N47 diesel (a complex repair often running into four- to five-figure costs), the structural oil consumption of the N63 V8, and wearing VANOS adjustment units that rattle at cold start or respond abruptly. Our inspector examines your prospective BMW on-site for about 1.5 hours using an inspection catalogue of more than 100 points — with particular focus on the engine generation, the transmission history, suspension wear and the BMW-typical on-board electronics. You receive your report within 24 hours as a clear basis for your purchase decision or price negotiation.
Have your used BMW inspected: on-site used-car check, from €289
BMW builds fascinating cars — with an equally fascinating range of faults. An N47 diesel with a rear timing chain, an N63 V8 with structural oil consumption or a 3 Series with worn control-arm bushings can become expensive before the first service is even due. Our inspector comes directly to the vehicle, checks more than 100 points with BMW-specific priorities and delivers a digital photo report within 24 hours. Fixed price from €289 incl. VAT and travel.
BMW: character, reliability and the typical buyer
The Bavarian premium promise
For decades, BMW has stood for sporty driving pleasure, high-quality build and a broad model range — from the compact class (1 Series, 2 Series) through the mid-range (3 Series, 4 Series) to the luxury class (5 Series, 7 Series) and the X SUVs. Used BMWs are in demand — which keeps prices high and defects often invisible.
Reliability: more model-dependent than with other brands
BMW reliability depends heavily on the engine. While inline-six engines such as the N52 or B58 are considered robust, the N47 diesel and N63 V8 have documented weak spots. ADAC breakdown statistics show that older F-series BMWs (2010-2018) stood out with above-average rates of engine problems and electronics failures.
Running costs: above average
BMW spare parts and workshop costs are well above average. Replacing the timing chain on the N47 engine, which sits at the rear of the block, requires removing the engine and can run into costs of several thousand euros. Anyone who buys without a check carries this risk alone.
The typical used-car buyer — and the risks
Used BMWs appeal to buyers looking for a premium feel at a reduced price compared to new. That is exactly what makes them risky: many examples come off lease, were driven hard and were cosmetically spruced up for resale but not technically refurbished. Without an independent inspection, you buy a car that gleams — but can become expensive.
BMW weak spots: what our check specifically examines
N47 diesel timing chain (rear-mounted)
The N47 diesel engine (120d, 318d, 520d, X3 20d and others, model years roughly 2007-2013) has its timing chain mounted on the transmission side of the engine. This is structurally unusual and extremely complex to repair: in the event of damage, the engine must be removed or at least largely disassembled. Chain wear shows up as rattling at cold start, which in the worst case only sets in shortly before the chain fails. Our inspector deliberately listens to the cold start, reviews OBD fault codes for camshaft-specific entries and checks the service history for chain repairs. An N47 without a well-maintained service record is an elevated risk.
N20/N26 four-cylinder timing chain
The N20 petrol engine (320i, 520i, X3 28i and others, from around 2011) and its US counterpart N26 also have a maintenance-intensive timing chain that, when worn, draws attention with characteristic rattling. Unlike the N47, the chain is mounted at the front, but the repair remains costly. Affected model years before 2015 were partly reworked by BMW, but older examples remain at risk. Our inspector checks the cold-start acoustics, the chain-tensioner history in the service documents and searches the fault memory for camshaft-sensor codes.
VANOS adjustment units (variable camshaft timing)
BMW's own VANOS system for variable camshaft control is a comfort and efficiency feature — but also a known wear point. Typical symptoms: rattling or harsh response at cold start, rough idle, poorer cold-start behaviour. Mainly affected are older inline-six engines (M52, M54, N52) and various four-cylinder generations. Our inspector reads out VANOS-related fault codes from the engine control unit and systematically evaluates the cold-start and idle behaviour.
N63 V8: structural oil consumption
The N63 turbo engine (550i, 750i, X5 50i and others, from 2008) has an unusual layout with hot turbines between the cylinder banks — and a documented, officially acknowledged increased oil consumption. Affected vehicles can use up to one litre of oil per 1,000 kilometres. BMW launched a Customer Care Package covering service work — but not all examples were upgraded. Our inspector checks the current oil level, assesses oil colour and consistency, looks for signs of oil consumption and verifies whether the vehicle received the Customer Care Package.
High-pressure fuel pump N54 and N43 (high fuel pressure)
The direct-injection N54 (335i, 135i, Z4 35i from 2006) and the N43 four-cylinder are known for faulty high-pressure fuel pumps that lead to jerky running, engine stuttering and starting problems. A high-pressure pump failure can force the engine into limp-home mode. Our inspector reads fuel-system pressure fault codes from the engine control unit and tests the response when accelerating from low revs — an early symptom of pump wear.
Suspension: control arms, steering rack, tie rods
BMW vehicles, especially the 3 Series and 5 Series of the E and F series, are known for wearing control-arm bushings and creaking steering racks — symptoms that are barely noticeable on asphalt but clearly audible on cobblestones or at low speeds. Tie-rod ends, top mounts and anti-roll-bar bushings are further typical wear points. Our inspector examines the suspension on the lift, tests all relevant pivot points with a shake test and assesses steering behaviour on the test drive.
iDrive, tailgate wiring harness and comfort electronics
The iDrive system (navigation, on-board computer, climate control) of older F-series BMWs (from around 2012) is prone to freeze-frames, memory failures and display problems. Even more frequently it affects the wiring-harness pass-through at the tailgate: the harness is flexed every time it opens and closes and breaks over time — a typical BMW finding that can disable central locking, the rear wiper and the reversing camera. Our inspector systematically checks all on-board functions and reads out every accessible control unit for stored faults.
ZF automatic gearbox: oil-change interval
In many models BMW fits the proven ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox (8HP), which is marketed as 'maintenance-free' — a claim that workshops and ADAC experts emphatically contradict. Anyone who has never changed the gearbox oil risks, at high mileage or with sporty driving, damage that can cost several thousand euros. Our inspector checks the gearbox oil for colour and smell (an indicator of overheating), tests all gear ranges on the test drive and queries the service history for gearbox-oil change entries.
Turbocharger wear (N47, N57, N54, B47)
Turbocharged BMW engines of all generations can develop turbocharger damage from oil starvation, missed oil-change intervals or aggressive driving. Typical symptoms: an oil film in the intercooler, an audible whistle or bearing play of the turbine wheel, reduced boost pressure and increased oil consumption. Our inspector checks the intercooler for an oil film, listens to the turbo under load and reads boost-pressure fault codes from the engine control unit.
A/C compressor and cooling system
The air-conditioning compressor is a frequent wear item in E- and F-series BMW vehicles — especially in cars with high mileage or rarely used air conditioning. In addition, coolant thermostats in some series are known to open too early and thus lower the operating temperature — which increases fuel consumption and wear. Our inspector tests the air conditioning for cooling performance, listens to the compressor for rattling and checks the thermostat's temperature behaviour while driving.
Bodywork and rust: strut towers, jack mounts
E-series BMW vehicles are considered relatively rust-resistant compared with some other German brands — yet there are typical weak spots: strut towers (especially on the rear axle of the E46 and E90), jack mounts under the sills and underbody areas behind the wheel arches. Newer F- and G-series vehicles are less affected, but not immune. Our inspector systematically examines all known rust spots and documents findings with photos.

Frequently inspected BMW models at checkdenwagen.de
Most often, our customers commission the BMW used-car inspection for vehicles of the 3 Series (E90, F30, G20) — for decades Germany's most popular BMW model and accordingly plentiful on the used market. Next come the 5 Series (E60, F10, G30), the 1 Series and 2 Series (compact class with frequent N47 and N20 engines), as well as the X range (X3, X5) with their SUV-specific demands on suspension and all-wheel-drive components. The 7 Series (E65, F01, G11) also comes up regularly — with particular focus on the complex electronics and air suspension. The X5 E53 with M57 diesel is a classic among inspection requests, as is the Z4 with N54 engine. Whatever the series: our inspector knows the model-specific quirks and adjusts the inspection focus accordingly.
