Have your used Audi checked: on-site used-car inspection, from €289

Audi stands for a premium aspiration and quattro all-wheel drive — but a used A4, A6 or Q5 carries specific risks that don't show up in the listing: TFSI engines burning oil through worn piston rings, timing chains that rattle, an S-tronic whose mechatronics are on the verge of failure, or air suspension whose compressor is living its last summer. Our inspector comes straight to the vehicle — 100+ points, OBD readout, paint-thickness measurement. Digital report within 24 hours. Fixed price from €289 incl. VAT and travel.

Are used Audis reliable?

Used Audis can be very reliable — or expensive, if the wrong patterns are present. The answer depends less on the brand than on the engine generation, gearbox type, service history and the question of whether the vehicle has been maintained in line with its weak points. checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of on-site used-car inspections operating throughout Germany, based in Berlin and with a network of inspectors across the whole country. Our Audi used-car check is targeted specifically at the documented weak spots of each model series: the first- and second-generation 2.0 TFSI (EA888) burns oil through porous piston rings when worn — a known, measurable problem. The timing chain of the same engine can rattle when warm if the chain tensioner is worn. S-tronic gearboxes (DQ200, seven-speed dry clutch) have mechatronics whose failure means four-figure repairs. On the quattro model with a Haldex clutch, a missing oil change is the most common prior damage. Our inspector examines your prospective Audi for around 1.5 hours on site against a checklist of more than 100 points and delivers a digital photo report within 24 hours — as a clear basis for your buying decision or price negotiation. Four things set us apart from a quick test drive: we are independent of seller pressure. We measure with our own equipment. We read out all control units. And we know the typical Audi weak spots by model series.

Why an Audi check before you buy?

Brand knowledge instead of gut feeling

Our inspector knows which TFSI engine has which piston-ring generation, when the timing chain of the 1.8/2.0 TFSI becomes critical, and whether the specific vehicle falls within the affected production periods. This knowledge determines what he checks especially closely.

100+ inspection points, OBD, paint thickness

Visual and acoustic inspection, digital ultrasonic paint-thickness measurement on all exterior panels, OBD readout of all accessible control units (engine, gearbox, ABS, airbag, MMI, driver assistance) and a test drive with targeted load on the drivetrain — all in one appointment.

Report in 24 hours, fixed price

You book, the inspector drives to the vehicle — you don't have to be there. Within 24 hours you receive the digital photo report. Fixed price from €289 incl. VAT and travel. No hourly rate, no fine print.

A negotiating basis built on facts

Documented TFSI oil consumption, a chain tensioner reported as rattling, or a worn Haldex clutch are solid arguments for a price reduction — or for the decision to walk away from the vehicle. The report gives you the numbers.

Audi weak spots: what our check specifically looks for

2.0 TFSI (EA888 Gen 1/2): oil consumption through piston rings

The first- and second-generation 2.0 TFSI (EA888, model years roughly 2008 to 2012) burns oil through worn piston rings when worn — recognisable by regular top-ups, an oily exhaust smell and corresponding fault codes. The inspector checks the oil level and its colour, reads lambda and mixture values from the engine control unit, and questions the service-history stamp about how often oil has been topped up. Newer EA888 engines of the third and fourth generation are far less affected.

Timing chain and chain tensioner (1.8/2.0 TFSI)

Both the 1.8 TFSI and the 2.0 TFSI of the EA888 family can show a characteristic rattle on cold start when worn — a sign of a slackening chain tensioner. If the chain snaps, engine damage is guaranteed. Our inspector listens specifically for the cold-start acoustic signature, reads the camshaft sensor for signal dropouts, and assesses whether the oil pressure is sufficient to supply the chain tensioner.

S-tronic/DSG mechatronics (DQ200, seven-speed dry clutch)

The DQ200 gearbox with dry clutch (fitted in many A3, Q3 and A1 with small petrol engines) is considered the highest-risk Audi gearbox: the mechatronics actuator wears, the clutch plates don't tolerate crawling traffic, and with missing transmission-oil changes the risk of failure rises sharply. The inspector tests all drive modes for shift shock and jolting, reads the gearbox control unit for stored faults, and checks the service history for transmission-oil entries.

Multitronic CVT (A4, A6): continuously variable gearbox with wear

The Multitronic gearbox (CVT, continuously variable, fitted in many front-wheel-drive A4 B6/B7 and A6 C6) shows slip and control weakness at high mileage — recognisable by uneven acceleration or a loss of traction. The cause is a worn variator belt or faulty hydraulics. The inspector tests the response under load, checks the transmission oil for colour and consistency, and reads the control unit for corresponding fault codes.

Haldex clutch on the quattro: oil change is decisive

Audi models with Haldex-based quattro systems (A3, TT, Q3, Q5 in certain variants) need a regular Haldex oil change — often every 40,000 kilometres or at every second service interval. Skipping it risks a worn Haldex pump and, in the worst case, all-wheel-drive failure. The inspector checks the service history for Haldex entries and, during the test drive, tests the all-wheel-drive engagement under targeted cornering loads.

MMI electronics and control units

The MMI infotainment system (Multi Media Interface) of older Audi generations (especially A6 C6, A8 D3, Q7 4L) is prone to faulty hard-disk units, failing displays and software faults in the CAN bus network. Newer vehicles have a densely networked field of control units where one fault cascades and disables other systems. The inspector reads out all accessible control units via OBD, assesses fault types and readiness codes, and checks whether faults were cleared before the sale.

Axles, control arms and suspension (A4/A6 multi-link)

Many Audi mid-range models (A4 B8/B9, A6 C7/C8) are fitted with elaborate multi-link axles that run very precisely on long journeys — but hide worn bushings and joints in a way that's hard to detect. Rattling over cobblestones or restless straight-line tracking points to worn control-arm bushings. The inspector examines the suspension on the lift and during the shake test, as well as the handling on the test drive.

Air suspension (A6, A8, Q7): compressor and air springs

The Audi A6 Allroad, A8 and Q7 are often fitted with adaptive air suspension — a comfort feature that becomes expensive when worn. Cracked air springs, a worn compressor or faulty valve blocks cause a ride-height loss that the system compensates for by pumping up frequently. The inspector checks the levelling behaviour after a cold start, reads the suspension control unit for pressure-loss codes, and documents whether the vehicle sags to one side.

DPF and EGR on the TDI: short-distance damage

Audi diesels, especially with the 2.0 TDI and the 3.0 TDI, can develop a clogged diesel particulate filter and a sooted-up EGR valve system under predominantly short-distance driving. Frequent regeneration cycles, a permanently stored DPF fault or increased fuel entering the engine oil are typical symptoms. The inspector reads the DPF counters and regeneration frequencies from the engine control unit and checks the EGR system for signs of sooting.

Water pump (plastic) and cooling

Several of Audi's TFSI and TDI engines use water pumps with a plastic impeller — a proven lightweight feature that, at high mileage or under thermal stress, quite literally falls apart. The inspector checks the coolant for an oil film, assesses the level and colour of the coolant fluid, and monitors the engine's temperature behaviour when warm for any tendency to overheat.

Which Audi model series do we inspect — and what do we pay particular attention to?

Audi A1 (8X, GB): Often fitted with the DQ200 seven-speed gearbox — our first inspection point. Small engine bay, tight body, prone to rust on the sills and wheel arches on vehicles over eight years old. Audi A3 (8P, 8V, 8Y): Broad drivetrain range from the simple 1.2 TFSI to the S3 with DQ500. The DQ200 gearbox (1.4, 1.8 TFSI) calls for particular attention. Haldex check on the quattro model. OBD inspection for deleted DSG fault codes. Audi A4 (B8, B9): Complex multi-link axles front and rear — wear assessment on the lift. EA888 engine diagnosis for oil consumption and timing chain. Multitronic inspection on front-wheel-drive variants of older model years. Interior build quality as a mileage indicator. Audi A6 (C6, C7, C8): On Allroad versions, the air suspension is the main focus. TDI variants for DPF condition and EGR sooting. MMI diagnosis for a faulty hard disk or display fault (C6). Control arms and suspension bushings at high mileage. Audi Q3, Q5, Q7: On the Q7, air suspension, 3.0 TDI DPF/EGR, proof of the Haldex oil change. Q5 often with the EA888 engine — oil consumption and timing chain. Q3 with DQ200 on small engines. All variants: quattro all-wheel-drive test on the test drive. Audi TT (8J, 8S): Often driven hard — clutch and gearbox check especially important. Magnetic ride diagnosis via OBD on DRC variants. Roof watertightness check on the Roadster. How we inspect: the inspector combines the standard inspection points (100+ points, OBD, paint thickness) with a check strategy specific to the model series and engine variant. He knows which A4 has which Multitronic version, whether the specific Q7 has air suspension fitted, and which software generation the MMI runs. This information comes from the vehicle registration document and the vehicle identification query via OBD — even before the inspection begins.

What our customers say

Frequently asked questions about the Audi used-car check

That depends heavily on the engine generation, gearbox type and service history. An Audi A4 or A6 with the 2.0 TDI or the revised 2.0 TFSI (EA888 Gen 3/4) and a complete service record can be very reliable. The critical points are mainly the old EA888 (Gen 1/2) with oil consumption from worn piston rings, the DQ200 seven-speed gearbox (dry clutch) and the Multitronic CVT at high mileage. An independent check before you buy gives you certainty about whether the specific car belongs to the well-maintained examples or to the higher-risk ones.

Buy your Audi with facts — not with hope.

TFSI oil consumption, a stretched timing chain, worn DSG mechatronics or air suspension on the verge of failure can quickly cost more than the car itself. The Audi used-car check gives you the facts — within 24 hours, from €289 incl. VAT and travel.
