checkdenwagen.de is an independent provider of on-site used-car inspections operating throughout Germany, based in Berlin and with a network of inspectors across the country. The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a compact SUV on an A-Class basis — which means premium looks, but also A-Class technology with the same weak points that are characteristic of the class. The first-generation GLA X156 (2013-2020) shares its MFA platform with the A-Class W176 and B-Class W246. That brings specific risks: the M270 four-cylinder petrol engine is known in early examples for a vulnerable timing-chain tensioner that wears prematurely and, in the worst case, allows the chain to jump. On top of that comes the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission, which stands out at low temperatures and in city traffic with jerking and shift pauses — a sign of worn mechatronics or transmission-control-unit problems. 4MATIC models with a Haldex clutch bring a further risk that becomes visible only with targeted OBD readouts and a test drive. The second-generation GLA H247 (from 2020) relies on MBUX, modernised M282 engines and the 8G-DCT. The timing-chain issue persists here too, and the complex MBUX infotainment system can present fault codes or software problems on used examples. Our inspector spends about 1.5 hours on-site, inspects according to a checklist of over 100 points and delivers the report as a sound basis for your purchase decision or price negotiation — from €289 incl. VAT and travel.
Have a used Mercedes-Benz GLA inspected: on-site used-car inspection, from €289
The Mercedes-Benz GLA is regarded as a compact SUV with premium aspirations — but beneath the bodywork sits A-Class technology with the corresponding weak points. On the X156 (2013-2020), the timing chain and timing-chain tensioner of the M270, along with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission, are the central risk points. On the H247 (from 2020), the M282 timing chain and the 8G-DCT come to the fore. Our inspector comes directly to the vehicle, checks over 100 points on-site and delivers a digital photo report within 24 hours. Fixed price from €289 incl. VAT and travel.
Mercedes-Benz GLA: character, generations and purchase risks at a glance
A-Class technology in SUV clothing
The GLA is not a model in its own right in a technical sense, but a raised A-Class on the MFA platform. That brings advantages — compact dimensions, agile handling, a broad engine range — but also the complete list of weak points of the A-Class range. Whoever buys a GLA is essentially buying an A176 or A247 with more ground clearance. The inspection programme is laid out accordingly.
7G-DCT and timing chain: the two central risk themes
On the X156, the timing chain and timing-chain tensioner of the M270, along with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission, are the most frequent cost drivers. The chain tensioner shows premature wear in early model years; the DCT transmission reacts with jerking and shift pauses to worn mechatronics or transmission-oil problems. On the H247, the M282 timing chain comes to the fore. Both issues are invisible in the listing, but can be checked specifically in the inspection.
High running costs from premium technology and all-wheel drive
Mercedes-typical spare-part prices meet, on the GLA, a technically elaborate DCT transmission and — on 4MATIC models — a Haldex clutch with its own maintenance requirements. A mechatronics repair on the 7G-DCT or a timing-chain-tensioner replacement turns out considerably more expensive than on volume brands. The Premium package at checkdenwagen.de provides a qualitative market-price assessment as a negotiating basis.
High demand, defects that are hard to spot
The GLA is a sought-after compact SUV on the used market — which makes reconditioned examples with concealed defects more likely. Freshly polished paint and cleared fault codes are not recognisable by laypeople. Our inspector measures paint thickness on every body panel and reads out all accessible control units — even when the memory was reset shortly before the sale.
Mercedes-Benz GLA generations: X156 and H247 compared
Two generations, one platform logic — but different weak-point profiles: GLA X156 (2013-2020): The first generation shares the MFA platform with the A-Class W176 and B-Class W246. The petrol engines are the M270 (GLA 200, 220, 250) and M133 (GLA 45 AMG), the diesel the OM651 (GLA 200 CDI/d, 220 d). The 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission is largely identical to that of the A-Class W176 — with the same well-known quirks at temperatures below ten degrees and in crawling traffic. 4MATIC models with a fourth- or fifth-generation Haldex clutch round out the drivetrain risk profile. The early M270 engines (GLA 200/220, up to around 2016) are known for the vulnerable timing-chain tensioner. The OM651 diesel brings the timing-chain and injector problems already known from other Mercedes models. GLA H247 (from 2020): The second generation relies on the new MFA2 platform, the M282 four-cylinder (GLA 180, 200, 250) and the OM654q diesel (GLA 200 d, 220 d). The 8G-DCT replaces the predecessor generation's 7G-DCT. MBUX is standard. The timing-chain issue persists with the M282, albeit with a revised tensioner design. The 8G-DCT is considered more mature than the 7G-DCT, but on early H247 examples occasionally shows shift delays. MBUX can produce fault patterns on used vehicles through software bugs or defective control units that were not yet apparent at handover.
Mercedes-Benz GLA weak points: what our inspection examines specifically
M270/M282 timing chain and timing-chain tensioner (X156 + H247)
The M270 four-cylinder petrol engine in the GLA X156 (GLA 200, 220, 250) is known in early model years for a hydraulic timing-chain tensioner that slackens prematurely. When oil pressure has not yet built up at cold start, the chain can briefly slacken and produce a faint rattling noise — an early warning sign that never appears in the listing. In the worst case the chain jumps a tooth, which can cause engine damage. The M282 in the H247 has a revised tensioner design, but here too the rule applies: cold-start acoustics and camshaft-specific OBD codes must be checked without fail. Our inspector listens specifically for the cold start, reads engine-control-unit codes and assesses the service history for oil-change regularity.
7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission: mechatronics and jerking behaviour (X156)
The 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission is the biggest Achilles heel of the GLA X156. At temperatures below ten degrees Celsius and in stop-and-go traffic, the transmission stands out with shift jerk, shift pauses and crawling behaviour that gives drivers the feeling the clutch is slipping. The cause is usually the transmission control unit (mechatronics), which wears under heavy use or poor maintenance. The mechatronics repair is a cost item in the mid-four-figure range. Our inspector tests all gear ranges on the test drive in both cold and warm states, reads the transmission control unit for stored fault codes and assesses the shift behaviour specifically.
4MATIC Haldex clutch: wear and overdue maintenance
GLA models with 4MATIC all-wheel drive use a Haldex clutch (fourth or fifth generation) that variably distributes torque between the front and rear axles. The Haldex clutch has its own oil-change interval, which on used vehicles has frequently been ignored. Old, contaminated Haldex oil accelerates clutch-plate wear and leads to poor power distribution. A defective Haldex pump filter is another typical weak point. Symptoms such as clunking when steering in tight bends or poor traction on loose surfaces can point to Haldex wear. Our inspector specifically checks the Haldex-specific OBD codes, assesses the service history for oil-change records and tests the response behaviour on the test drive.
OM651 diesel: timing chain, timing-chain sprocket and injectors (X156 GLA 200/220 d)
The OM651 four-cylinder diesel in the GLA X156 (GLA 200 CDI, 200 d, 220 d) brings the same well-documented weak points as in the C-, E- and GLK-Class: the plastic timing-chain sprocket wears faster than intended when oil changes are skipped, and piezo injectors can fail at high mileage. A rattle at cold start right after starting that subsides after a few seconds is the best-known warning sign. Our inspector listens specifically for the cold start, reads OM651-specific fault codes and checks the service booklet for regular oil-change intervals — the most important prophylaxis against timing-chain damage.
8G-DCT shift delays and software level (H247)
The 8G-DCT dual-clutch transmission in the GLA H247 is considered more mature than the predecessor's 7G-DCT, but in early production years (2020-2021) it occasionally shows shift delays when pulling away and in the low rev range. Mercedes has provided software corrections via OTA (over the air) and workshop updates — not all used H247 examples, however, have the current software level. Our inspector reads the transmission control unit and the installed software level, assesses the shift behaviour on the test drive and documents any noticeable restrictions.
MBUX infotainment system: fault patterns and control-unit defects (H247)
MBUX is standard in the GLA H247 and closely networked with numerous vehicle systems — navigation, voice control, driver assistance and climate control all run through the same control unit. On used H247 examples, outdated software levels, defective control units or faulty interface modules can lead to system crashes, touchscreen failures or erroneous driver-assistance messages. Since MBUX components are expensive to replace, a targeted OBD readout before purchase is indispensable. Our inspector reads out all accessible control units and tests the touchscreen, voice control and driver-assistance systems for proper function.
48V mild-hybrid system: belt-driven starter generator wear (H247 with EQ Boost)
The GLA H247 with the M282 engine in the EQ Boost variant (GLA 250) combines the combustion engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The belt-driven starter generator (RSG) handles both starter and generator functions. In the event of premature wear or a defective lithium-ion buffer battery, the mild-hybrid system shows faults that restrict the start-comfort and energy-recovery functions. Our inspector reads the 48V system control unit for fault codes and assesses the function of the belt-driven starter generator for plausibility.
Suspension: wishbones, comfort bushings and suspension mounts (both generations)
Despite its SUV appearance, the GLA is built on an A-Class basis — and the suspension is laid out correspondingly more compactly than on a genuine SUV. Wishbone bushings, front strut mounts and anti-roll-bar links show typical wear on higher-mileage examples, announcing itself through creaking over bumps, imprecise steering and rumbling noises in the cabin. Our inspector examines the suspension on the lift, tests all pivot points with a shaker test and systematically assesses steering and damper behaviour on the test drive.
Fault memory: codes cleared before the sale (both generations)
Clearing OBD fault codes before a sale is a common method of hiding problems from a prospective buyer. Cleared codes, however, leave traces: the inspector can see that the memory was recently reset and assesses this as a clear warning sign. On the GLA, engine and transmission control-unit codes are particularly relevant — timing chain, DCT mechatronics, 4MATIC and, on the H247, MBUX and the 48V system. Our inspector reads out all accessible control units and documents both active and recently cleared codes in the photo report.
Paintwork and bodywork: spotting reconditioned accident vehicles
Visually reconditioned used GLAs are barely distinguishable from as-new condition thanks to professional polishing. GLA models from lease contracts in particular are intensively reconditioned before resale — dents, scratches and repainted areas disappear visually, but are precisely detectable through paint-thickness measurement. Our digital paint-thickness measurement shows to the millimetre which component has been repainted or whether filler is concealing accident damage. The results are presented as a heatmap in the report.
Which Mercedes-Benz GLA engine is the best choice — and which should you avoid?
The choice of engine on the GLA is closely tied to the choice of generation. Recommended: The GLA 200 with the M270 (X156 from model year 2017) or M282 (H247) is considered the most sensible entry point, provided the cold-start acoustics are unremarkable and the service history is complete. On well-maintained examples with documented oil changes, timing-chain wear is considerably rarer. The GLA 220 d with the OM654q (H247) is regarded as the most mature diesel engine of the second generation, without the massive OM651 problems. Models from model year 2022 onward also benefit from improved software levels on the 8G-DCT and MBUX. Buy with caution: The GLA X156 with the 7G-DCT and the early M270 (model years 2013-2016) combines both central risk themes — a vulnerable timing-chain tensioner and a vulnerable DCT transmission — in one vehicle. Without a complete maintenance history and without an inspection finding, these examples carry an elevated risk. The GLA 200/220 d X156 with the OM651 diesel is additionally burdened by the well-known injector and timing-chain-sprocket weak points. 4MATIC models without a documented Haldex oil change should likewise be assessed with caution. The engine code is stated in the vehicle documents (registration certificate Part I, field P.5) and can be read off the type plate in the engine bay. Our inspector identifies the engine generation directly on the vehicle and tailors the inspection checklist accordingly.
What does a used Mercedes-Benz GLA cost — and what is it really worth?
The price level of a used Mercedes-Benz GLA varies considerably — depending on generation, engine, equipment, mileage and maintenance history. Early GLA X156 models from model years 2013 to 2016 can be had today for considerably less than later examples, but bring the full risk profile of timing-chain tensioner and 7G-DCT mechatronics with them. A cheaply offered X156 without a service booklet can quickly generate a substantial part of the purchase price in follow-up costs through DCT repair and timing-chain-tensioner replacement. Well-maintained X156 models with a complete service history and proven 4MATIC oil change justify a noticeably higher purchase price — and are in practice more reliable than cheaper examples without records. GLA H247 models sit considerably higher in price, but offer more mature technology (8G-DCT, OM654q diesel) and benefit from MBUX and more modern safety systems. With ex-lease returns showing low mileage and lacking a complete service history, caution is nevertheless advised — the maintenance status is not apparent from the listing. As a general rule: the list price says little about the actual value. The Premium package at checkdenwagen.de includes a qualitative market-price assessment as a basis for negotiation.
